Fusano and Lynch Take Invitational Doubles Title
April 29, 2001
OJAI, CA - The Cal women's tennis team was well-represented on the final day of the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, CA. Two freshmen and a sophomore were center stage today for a chance at a title for the Bears. Freshman Raquel Kops-Jones advanced past four opponents over the last three days, and cruised her way to the Pac-10 Championship match in singles.
Kops-Jones arrived to Sunday's match with ASU's Adria Engel after downing her last four opponents in straight sets. Engel reached the finals by knocking off Cal's co-captain Christina Fusano in the quarterfinals on Friday. Engel would prove too tough to beat, as the Sun Devil would take down Kops-Jones in the championship, 7-5, 6-2.
Cal would find success in the Invitational doubles championship, as the duo of freshman Catherine Lynch and sophomore Christina Fusano advanced to Sunday's championship match after defeating three previous opponents, including Cal's other duo of Kristen Case and Morisa Yang in the semifinal match. Fusano and Lynch would go head-to-head with Washington's Erin Boisclair and Erin Hoe, playing for the title in a three-set match. Cal would take the Invitational Doubles Championship with a 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Huskies tandem.
The Bears will now refocus and prepare for the NCAA Regional Championships held at Cal's own Hellman Tennis Courts, May 12-13.
