OSU Rally Falls Short

April 29, 2001

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Trailing by eight runs going into the ninth inning, Oregon State brought the go-ahead run to the plate but the Beavers' rally fell short in a 12-9 loss to Hawai'i in non-league baseball Sunday afternoon at Rainbow Stadium. Oregon State scored five runs in the ninth and had the bases loaded when the game ended with a close play at first base.

OSU (28-18 overall, 8-7 Pacific-10) returns to Pac-10 play next weekend still having won seven of its last nine games and 20 of its last 30. The Beavers play a three-game series at Washington on Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., all three games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Sunday, Hawai'i (22-24, 10-17 Western Athletic) took control of the game with a seven-run sixth inning, then added two runs in the eighth to lead 12-4 . Through eight innings, Rainbow rigththander Chad Giannetti had limited the Beavers to six hits and OSU hadn't scored since the fourth inning.

Pinch-hitter Pat Stevens opened the inning by drawing a full-count walk, then pinch-hitter Kerisi Reynolds doubled to right-centerfield and Stevens moed to third. Eric Stark's sacrifice fly scored Stevens to make it 12-5, then Jason McBride drew a walk and Giannetti was replaced by Bryan Lee.

Brian Barden grounded out to second, snapping his 10-game hitting streak, but the runners advanced to second and third. Chris Biles then singled to left-center to drive in Reynolds and McBride and make it 12-7.

Curtis Davis, who finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, rolled a single through the left side and Josh Carter beat out an infield single to load the bases. Andy Jarvis dropped a single into leftfield to drive in another run, and it was 12-8.

Stevens came up again representing the tying run and grounded a single through the right side, scoring another run to cut the gap to 12-9. Now Reynolds stepped to the plate representing the go-ahead run.

After taking two strikes, Reynolds hit a high chopper off the artificial turf just in front of the plate, Lee leaped to snare it and from here it was a footrace to the bag. Reynolds made a headfirst slide and got his left hand on the bag in almost a dead heat with Lee's foot, Reynolds was called out and the game was over.

The game was being televised, and on replays it appeared that Reynolds' hand touched the bag ahead of Lee's foot.

Oregon State had taken a 4-1 lead with a three-run fourth inning that was capped by Zach Gordon's two-out, two-run homer to centerfield. Gordon was playing with six stitches in his lip after he had fouled a bunt try up into his face in the Beavers' 18-7 win on Saturday night.

Righthander Thad Johnson took the loss for Oregon State, falling to 6-6 this season. Johnson pitched five-plus innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits, one walk and two hit batters while striking out three.

Davis' three-hit day finished a big series, as the designated hitter batted .667 (8-for-12) with one home run, three doubles, five runs batted in and seven runs scored. Davis is batting .426 for the season.

The Beavers had 12 hits in the game, giving them at least 10 hits for the 30th time in 46 games this season.
