UW Women's Golfers Stay West for NCAA Regionals

April 30, 2001

Seattle, WA - The Washington women's golf team received the number-nine seed in the West Region and will travel to Oregon State for the NCAA Regional Championship May 10-12 at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore. It is the 10th consecutive season the Huskies have received an NCAA regional bid.

Second-ranked Arizona, the 2001 Pac-10 Champion, heads the 21-team regional field. Also included in the regional is third-ranked USC, fourth-ranked Stanford, seventh-ranked Tennessee and five other team's ranked in the top-25 of the latest Golfweek College Rankings. The Huskies are 24th in this week's standings while junior Kelli Kamimura is ranked 25th among individual players.

'This is a very, very tough regional,' says Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'It is ironic that eight of the nine Pac-10 teams that qualified for the regional wound up in the West. We have played the course in the past and done well there, so we will try to use that as an advantage.'

The last time the Huskies played at Trysting Tree was at the 1998 Northwest Invitational. Washington won that tournament by one stroke over Pepperdine. Kamimura, a freshman at the time, tied the Waves' Tamie Durdin for first-place, but lost medalist honors in a playoff. Current Husky senior Elisha Au finished 18th in that tournament.

Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each of the three regional tournaments to the NCAA Championships. The East Regional is being held at the Finley Golf Course at North Carolina and the Central Regional is being contested at Purdue's Birk Boilermaker Golf Complex/Kampen Course. The NCAA Championship finals will be held at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort, Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, co-hosted by Stetson University and the Central Florida Sports Commission.
