PULLMAN - The Washington State baseball team had no apparent trouble with offense nor defense in a 19-0 exhibition victory over the Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs Wednesday night at Bailey-Brayton Field. Every Cougar hitter registered a hit and five pitchers surrendered four hits combined. While the game didn't count for WSU in the record books, the Dawgs saw their record slip to 26-8 to end the season.
After Brandon Reddinger doubled-in Justin Williams to put the Cougs on the scoreboard in the second inning, Washington State saw its first four batters in the third inning collect hits, as Bookie Gates and Stefan Bailie drove in Evan Hecker and Mike Knight, respectively, before coming across the plate themselves for a 5-0 WSU lead.
The same four batters continued to put runs on the board in the fourth inning, as Knight and Gates each collected a RBI before Bailie hit a long double to centerfield to drive in two more runs. Justin Williams capped the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to score Bailie and give Washington State a 10-0 advantage.
Bailie scored another run in the sixth with a lead off home run well over the left field fence off Dawgs. In ` reliever Michael Polzer. In the eighth, the Cougars scored eight more runs, highlighted by Justin Williams' grand slam with no outs to stretch the lead to 16 runs. Three unearned runs were scored with two outs to cap the WSU scoring for the evening.
Starter Tyson Thompson earned the win by being the most effective pitcher, going two innings as he struck out two and did not allow a hit. Tony Banaszak came on in relief in the third and pitched two more innings before Nick Kenyon recorded two innings in relief as well. Sean Donlin struck out two batters in his two innings' work, and Lanakila Niles struck out two more in the ninth in his only inning of action.
