UW Women to Host 1st & 2nd Round NCAA Tennis Matches
May 3, 2001
SEATTLE - The Washington women's tennis team received the No. 12 seed and was selected to host first-and second-round NCAA Tournament matches next weekend the NCAA tennis committee announced Thursday.
Washington (18-7) meets Army (17-12) in first-round action on Saturday, May 12 at 2 p.m. Pacific Time. The other first-round matchup in Seattle features Illinois (17-7) against Virginia Commonwealth (13-7) at 10 a.m. Both matches will be played at Quillian Stadium, located on the UW campus directly north of Bank of America Arena.
Winners of the first-round matches meet on Sunday, May 13 at noon for the right to advance to the 16-team NCAA finals in Stone Mountain, Ga., May 17-20.
The UW women are making their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, but are first-time hosts for the event. First- and second-round tickets are $5 each day for adults and $3 for students and children.
The conference runner-up Huskies are one of seven Pac-10 teams to receive tournament berths, including champion Stanford, Arizona State, California, UCLA, USC and Washington State.
'We're excited about hosting because we were unsure as to whether or not we would be shipped off to play somewhere else. When we heard the news we were really thrilled and relieved at the same time,' said UW assistant coach Jill Hultquist. 'The teams that are in our region are teams that we haven't played and we know very little about them. We are comfortable with the draw, but we won't take anyone lightly.'
The Huskies enter the NCAA Championships ranked 14th in the latest Collegiate Tennis Rankings. The only other ranked team in their group is No. 45 Virginia Commonwealth. Washington has an 8-7 record this season against teams from the 64-team NCAA field. UW has never played Army, Illinois or VCU in women's tennis.
The Huskies lost to Georgia Tech in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament, falling 6-3 in Los Angeles.
The NCAA women's singles and doubles championships follow the team championships, beginning May 21 in Stone Mountain, Ga. Senior Kristina Kraszewski, who earned her fourth NCAA singles berth, will be joined by freshman teammate Claire Carter in the 64-team individual field. Kraszewski and sophomore Darija Klaic were invited to compete in the 32-team doubles championships along with the Washington duo of Carter and junior Ilona Kordonskaya.
