Baseball Held Scoreless in Loss to Lewis-Clark State
May 5, 2001
LEWISTON, Idaho - For the first time in over a year, the Washington State Cougar baseball team did not send any runners across the plate in a 12-0 loss to the Lewis-Clark State Warriors Saturday afternoon at Harris Field. With the win, LCSC improved to 48-12 while the Cougs slipped to 15-31.
The last opponent the Cougars failed to score any runs against was in 2000, as Stanford skunked WSU 16-0 April 9. Arkansas was the last non-conference opponent to shut out the Cougars, as it walked away with a 1-0 victory over WSU last season as well.
Washington State catcher Brandon Reddinger and designated hitter Tanner Kahler were the lone bright spots for the Cougs Saturday, as they hit a combined five-for-five for the game. The rest of the Cougar bats went silent against the Warrior pitching staff, led by starter Chris Maebus who lasted seven innings and surrendered only five hits while striking out six Cougar batters.
The Warriors scored eight runs through the first three innings off WSU starter Justin Cayetano, including a five run third inning that saw LCSC shortstop Yoshi Kimura hit a three-run double that put the Warriors up by seven. Lewis-Clark State did not fare as well against reliever Jamin Svendsen in the last five innings, but the two-time defending NAIA champion Warriors still put two runs on the board in both the sixth and seventh innings to extend the lead to the final margain of victory.
The next game for the Cougs will be back at Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday as they finish the weekend series with LCSC. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
