Men's and Women's Track and Field Falls To Stanford at Big Meet

May 5, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - For the first time since 1997, Stanford swept California in the men's and women's competition at the Big Meet Saturday at Cobb Track and Angell Field. Stanford won the men's competition 82-81, the closest decision on the men's side since Cal defeated Stanford by the same score in 1988. The Stanford women defeated Cal, 101.5-60.5.

The Cal men saw its three-meet winning streak snapped but still hold a commanding 63-42-2 series lead on the men's side, including winning 28 of the last 30 meets. The Stanford women maintain a 12-10 edge over Cal.

The men's team race came down to the second to last event, the men's triple jump. Cal sophomore Vincent Ibia placed first in the event with a PR of 51-5. But, as a result of the Bears other top triple jumper, Jerriod Mack, being injured over the last month of the season, Stanford was able to claim the necessary four clinching points for the meet by coming in second and third in the event.

The 1500m also can be pointed to as a critical deciding factor in the meet. Cal's Bolota Asmerom ran a great race but finished third in 3:43.897, while Stanford's Donald Sage was second in 3:43.892. This gave Cal one point, instead of three for second.

One of the highlights for Cal included senior Maria Lopez breaking her own school record in the pole vault. Lopez won the competition with a clearance of 13-2.5, bettering her previous PR of 13-1.5, set at last year's NCAA meet.

Cal victories on the men's side came from Phillip Pipersburg in the 200m (21.55), Jelani Hogg in the 400m (48.28), Bolota Asmerom in the 5000m (14:10.92), Aaron Ellis in the 400mH (55.78), Rhuben Williams in the shot put (58-6), Bubba McLean in the pole vault (16-8.75), Ibia in the triple jump (51-3), the 4x100m Relay of Nick Mazur, Robert Kennedy, Ahmad Wright and Pipersburg (40.48) and the 4x400m Relay of Wright, Desmond McGill, Mark Blanco and Hogg (3:11.45).

First-place finishes for the Bear women came from Zhauntel Holman in the 100m (11.94), Jennifer Joyce in the hammer (193-11), Lopez in the pole vault (13-2.5) and the 4x400m Relay of Chloe Jarvis, Shavone Jennings, Deanna Slaton and Erin Belger (3:49.69 ).

Sophomore Joe Berro turned in the biggest PR of the day for the Cal men in the javelin, finishing third with a throw of 197-0, beating his previous PR of 181-11. Other men's PRs included Nick Mazur in the 100m (10.70), Matt Blair in the 110mH (14.93), the 4x100m Relay (40.48) and the 4x400m Relay (3:11.45).

Cal junior Shawna Adkins posted two huge PRs, finishing third in the long jump (18-10w) and fourth in the javelin (131-11).

The Bears next travel to the Modesto Relays, Sat., May 12. Cal also hosts the Pac-10 Multi-Event Championships, May 12-13, at Edwards Stadium.
