No. 14 Softball Shutout By No. 2 UCLA, 4-0
May 5, 2001
LOS ANGELES - The No. 2 ranked UCLA Bruins shutout No. 14 Oregon State, 4-0, in Saturday's Pacific-10 Conference softball showdown.
With the loss, the Beavers fall to 40-21-1 overall and 7-9 in Pac-10 action while UCLA improves to 52-4 on the season and 13-4 in conference play.
The Bruins jumped on the board early with a pair of runs in the first inning, taking advantage of three singles, a walk and hit batter as eight batters stepped to the plate.
Natasha Watley, who led off with a single, scored what proved to be the game-winner after a two-out single up the middle by Stacey Nuveman.
Oregon State hurler Monica Hoffman struggled in the early innings as UCLA added another run in the second when Monique Mejia, who had walked, scored on a wild pitch that bounced past catcher Traci Feldt to the backstop.
The Beavers put together back-to-back hits in the first inning but stranded a pair of runners and didn't get two consecutive hits again until a leadoff single by Feldt in the seventh, followed by a shot to right field by Clare Burnum. Once again however, OSU left runners stranded and failed to score.
'I felt we played hard for seven innings,' said Oregon State head coach Kirk Walker. 'We were not as crisp on defense and Monica struggled a bit, but I think we did a nice job keeping the game from getting out of control.'
The Bruins finished the game with just six hits while the Beavers had five. Senior Shawna Feldt was the lone OSU player to record multiple hits, finishing the day 2-for-3.
The Beavers finish their season series with UCLA on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
