LOS ANGELES - UCLA avenged one of its four losses on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium, defeating 14th-ranked Oregon State by a score of 4-0. With the win, the Bruins improve to 52-4, 13-4 Pac-10, while the Beavers fall to 40-21-1, 7-9 Pac-10.
UCLA opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Natasha Watley led off with a single and advanced to second when Tairia Mims was hit by a pitch. Watley would score on a long single up the middle by Bruin catcher Stacey Nuveman. A single by Courtney Dale would load the bases with two outs, and centerfielder Amanda Freed drew an RBI walk for the second run of the inning, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead.
In the second, the Bruins added another run, as second baseman Monique Mejia drew the first of her two walks on the day, stole second and went to third on a single by Watley. A walk to Nuveman loaded the bases, before a wild pitch scored Mejia to give UCLA a 3-0 lead.
A fourth run would cross the plate in the fourth inning, as Mejia again led off with a walk. She would advance to second when Stephanie Ramos reached on an error by OSU first baseman Steph Adams, and the bases would be loaded when Mims was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game, this time taking the pitch on her batting helmet. Nuveman then stepped to the plate and roped an RBI single for the fourth and final run of the game.
The Bruins and Beavers return to action on Sunday afternoon with a 1 pm first pitch. The game will mark senior day for four UCLA players: Lupe Brambila, Courtney Dale, Marin Noack and Stephanie Swenson.
