Windermere Cup Results

May 5, 2001

Seattle - The Washington women's varsity eight won its third consecutive Opening Day title and the Croatian men's Olympic Team snapped a 10-year Husky streak in the premier races of the day at the 15th annual Windermere Cup on the Montlake Cut Saturday.

The Washington women covered the 2,000-meter course in a time of 6 minutes, 17.12 seconds, besting the Romanian National Team that finished second in 6:22.45. The University of Victoria, finalists with UW at the Henley Royal Regatta last July, was third at 6:23.00.

On the men's side, it was all Croatia, as the team that captured a bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics flew across the course in a time of 5:31.75. The University of Victoria was second in 5:36.37 while the Washington men's varsity eight finished third at 5:40.21. It was the first time the Husky varsity had not won the Windermere Cup since 1990, when the People's Republic of China and the Naval Academy both knocked off the UW crew.

In the junior varsity races, the Washington women won an 11th straight Cascade Cup while the Husky men's junior varsity won its third straight Cascade Cup.

Washington crews picked up victories in men's and women's freshman and novice eights, open eights and men's varsity four. San Diego State claimed the women's varsity four title, ahead of the Huskies who finished second.

Washington now prepares for the Pac-10 Championships, to be held May 13 on Lake Natoma, just outside Sacramento, Calif.
