No. 11 Arizona State Softball Completes Weekend Sweep Over No. 5 California
May 6, 2001
BERKELEY, Calif. - Nichole Thompson's RBI single in the seventh broke a 1-1 tie, which was followed by a Kara Brun three-run home to seal the weekend sweep over fifth-ranked California, 5-1, today in Berkeley.
Cal got on the board first in the first inning, but ASU came back and tied the game in the sixth inning. Missy Hixon singled to left and then Nichole Thompson reached on an error. Brun then singled to left to load the bases. Phelan Wright followed with a deep drive to left field to drive in Hixon.
ASU then unloaded four runs in the seventh. Kristen Swetel opened the frame with a single to right. Jennifer Forner sacrificed Swetel to second and was followed by a Kristin Farber bunt single to advance Swetel to third. Thompson then fought the ball off into right field, breaking the tie by scoring Swetel. Brun then stepped to the plate and crushed the ball over the left field fence to secure the win.
Erica Beach started the game and pitched the first five and a third before giving way to Kirsten Voak (14-7) who pitched to two batters. Beach reentered in the seventh and closed the game out.
Cal's Nicole DiSalvio had a no hitter through five innings before Hixon laced a single to left field in the top of the sixth.
Up next, ASU returns to Tempe to close out the regular season with a single game against Washington on Friday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. and a doubleheader against UCLA on Saturday.
