No. 5 Softball Drops 5-1 Game To No. 11 Arizona State

BERKELEY, CA - Nichole Thompson singled home Kristen Swetel, followed by a three-run homer by Kara Brun as the No. 11 Arizona State Sun Devils scored four runs in the seventh to knock off the No. 5 California Golden Bears at Levine-Fricke Field, 5-1. With the win, ASU improves to 34-17 overall and 9-9 in the Pac-10. The loss drops Cal to 48-13 overall and 5-12 in the conference.
ASU did not tie the score until the sixth when Phalen Wright sent a sacrifice fly to deep left field, scoring Missy Hixon from third.
After the Bears went scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, the Sun Devils put a rally together in the top of the seventh that plated four runs, giving ASU the eventual 5-1 final.
Senior Nicole DiSalvio started for Cal and pitched five hitless innings before allowing her first hit in the top of the sixth. She finished the day allowing an unearned run on just two hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Junior Jocelyn Forest followed DiSalvio in the sixth after the Devils loaded the bases. She wound up allowing four runs on four hits with a strikeout and a walk and falls to 25-6 on the year.
Erica Beach started for ASU and pitched the first 5.1 innings before giving way to Kirsten Voak who got the next two outs in the sixth to earn the win and improve to 14-7 on the year. Beach returned to the circle and pitched a perfect seventh to close out the game.
Cal closes out the regular season next weekend as it travels to Oregon to take on U of O on Friday at 2 p.m. and Oregon State in a doubleheader on Saturday, with a noon first pitch.
