HEADING DOWN THE STRETCH

Pac-10 teams find themselves within two series of finshing their Conference slate. CALIFORNIA will become the first Pac-10 team to end its season this week as it plays non-conference games against Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and Kansas State ... Other non-conference action has STANFORD taking on Cal Poly and San Francisco, WASHINGTON against Portland and UCLA battling Cal State Fullerton ... Pac-10 play features the Cardinal hosting ARIZONA, OREGON STATE visiting the Bruins, ARIZONA STATE against the Huskies in Seattle and WASHINGTON STATE in L.A. to face USC.

Only two Conference contests are left on Arizona's schedule. The 'Cats take on Stanford this weekend for a three-game set at Sunken Diamond ... The Cardinal holds an 85-46 lead over Arizona in the all-time record between the two teams ... Last year the 'Cats managed to take one game from Stanford on the farm. They defeated the Cardinal 8-5 ... Arizona stands in sixth place in the Conference rankings, a game behind fourth-place Arizona State and Oregon State ... The 'Cats are ranked third in the Pac-10 in batting with a .318 average. They hold first place in the Conference stats in hits (587) and total bases (874), tied for first in saves (14), and are second in slugging percentage (.474), runs scored (393), RBI (351), home runs (46) and putouts (1357)

... Senior RF Shelley Duncan leads the Conference in slugging percentage (.686), RBI (65), home runs (21) and total bases (140) ... Senior 1B Ernie Durazo paces the Pac-10 in runs (61) and doubles (20), and is second in hits (84) and total bases (133).

The Sun Devils had last weekend off and should be well rested to face the Huskies in Seattle ... Last week ASU split a two-game midweek series against then-No. 19 Tennessee. The Sun Devils have won nine of their last 12 games ... Freshman RHP Mike Esposito was impressive in ASU's win last week, allowing no runs on two hits with six strikeouts in six innings pitched. He was awarded his first Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor for his effort. Esposito is 4-2 on the year with a 3.64 ERA ... Junior CF Chris Duffy has swung a hot bat lately and is riding a nine-game hitting streak. He is batting .425 in those nine games, notching multiple hits in seven of them ... Senior 3B Mike Lopez is also hitting well, batting .480 (12-for-25) during his current seven-game hitting streak ... With his 3-for-3 plate performance against Tennessee May 1, senior C Casey Myers has 27 multi-hit games on the season ... Coach Murphy is only one win away from notching his 100th Pac-10 win ... ASU owns the top spot of many of the Pac-10 offensive statistical categories, placing first in batting average (.332), on- base percentage (.432), runs (397), RBI (361), doubles (107), walks (251) and stolen bases (93).

CALIFORNIA (30-22 Overall, 14-10 Pac-10)Last Week: San Francisco W 12-1, UCLA W 6-2, 9-8 (11), 8-6 This Week: Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, at Kansas State

The Golden Bears went 4-0 last week, picking up a midweek win against San Francisco and a sweep at UCLA ... With their 30-22 overall record, Cal was ranked for the first time this season in a national poll. Collegiate Baseball lists the Bears at No. 29 ... This season marks the first time Cal has had 30 wins or more since 1995 ... Cal has finished its Conference slate and currently stands in third place in the Pac-10 standings with a 14-10 record. With its 14 Conference wins, the Bears are in contention for postseason play. The last time Cal was in an NCAA Regional was 1995. This season's Conference record also marks the Bears' best Pac-10 showing since the two divisions merged in 1999 ... Last weekend's sweep at UCLA was the first time the Bears had swept the Bruins in Los Angeles since 1991 ... In the four games last week, senior RF Rob Meyer hit .500 (10-for-20) with a double, home run, eight runs scored and six RBI. He was awarded his first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor ... Freshman closer Matt Brown picked up a win against the Bruins May 5 and is now tied for the second-most single season saves in school history (8) ... Cal's extra-inning 9-8 win over UCLA marked its 18th one-run contest of the season, and seventh extra-inning game ... The Bears become the first Pac-10 team to finish their season this weekend. They play non-conference games against Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and Kansas State.

OREGON STATE (29-20 Overall, 9-9 Pac-10)Last Week: WASH L 4-11, W 9-1, L 1-3 This Week: at UCLA

Oregon State came away with only one win after playing Washington last weekend in Seattle. The Beavers stand tied for fourth place with Arizona State ... At 29-20 on the season and 9-9 in Pac-10 play, OSU has surpassed its win total and matched their number of Pac-10 victories from a year ago. The Beavers still have six games left to play, three-game series against UCLA and USC ... Third baseman Brian Barden tied the school record for most hits in a season when he grounded a single up the middle for his 75th hit this year. Barden went 3-for-8 against the Huskies with one run scored and one RBI ... Senior Scott Nicholson had another great outing for the Beavers on Saturday. The left-hander tossed a seven-hitter, allowing only one run with one walk and four strikeouts. He improved to 10-2 on the season and is 4-0 against Washington over the last two seasons ... Sophomore LF Chris Biles also did well that game going 3-for-5 with four RBI ... The Beavers are second in the Pac-10 in batting with a .322 team average. They lead the Pac-10 in slugging percentage (.482) and home runs (51) and are second in on-base percentage (.396) and total bases (843).

STANFORD (35-13 Overall, 12-6 Pac-10)Last Week: Santa Clara W 15-8, Sacramento State L 3-12 This Week: Cal Poly, at San Francisco

Last week, Stanford pounded out 20 hits to defeat Santa Clara 15-8, before being handed its most lopsided loss of the season, falling 12-3 to Sacramento State ... The Cardinal win against Santa Clara was its 19th straight dating back to 1997 ... In the victory against the Broncos, the freshman trio of Jonny Ash, Brian Hall and Carlos Quentin each notched three hits. All nine Stanford starters had a hit in the game and freshman Sam Fuld, sophomore Ryan Garko and juniors Andy Topham and Chris O'Riordan had two hits apiece ... The Cardinal didn't fare as well in its next game, being upset by Sacramento State. The last time the Hornets defeated the Cardinal was May 8, 1995 ... Stanford continues to pace the Pac-10 in pitching and fielding with a 3.32 ERA and .975 fielding percentage ... Stanford has eight games left in its season, including Conference series against Arizona and Washington State. The Cardinal plays two midweek games against Cal Poly and San Francisco this week before hosting the 'Cats.

UCLA (26-23 Overall, 6-12 Pac-10)Last Week: San Diego State W 3-1, Cal L 2-6, 8-9 (11), 6-8 This Week: Cal State Fullerton, OSU

The Bruins picked up a midweek win against San Diego State before being swept at home by Cal ... Despite the team's struggles, several Bruins are doing well at the plate. Senior CF Matt Pearl went 7-for-18 last week, including three multi-hit games. He also added two home runs, scored four times and drove in three runs ... Senior 2B Josh Canales is riding a 16-game hitting streak. He has hit safely in 31 of his last 32 games. He went 2-for-4 with two runs scored against the Aztecs ... RHP Casey Janssen gave a nice performance on the mound in relief Friday against the Bears. The frosh allowed only one run on seven hits with six strikeouts in the no-decision outing ... Senior LHP Bobby Roe picked up his fourth win of the season against San Diego State. He allowed just one hit and struck out two batters in three innings of work ... Freshman SS Preston Griffin has been hit by 13 pitches this season. The UCLA school record for hit by pitch is 14 ... UCLA ranks third in the Pac-10 in fielding with a .963 percentage. The Bruins rank fourth in assists with 566 ... Senior DH Brian Baron's batting average has dropped to .459, but that is still good for first in the Conference and is 42 points higher than the next closest competitor. Baron also leads the Pac-10 in hits (94) and is second in on-base percentage (.496) ... UCLA faces No. 1-ranked Cal State Fullerton Wednesday, before hosting Oregon State this weekend.

USC (33-16 Overall, 13-5 Pac-10)Last Week: San Diego W 5-4 (10) This Week: WSU

USC played only one game last week, picking up a 5-4 victory against San Diego. The victory marked the second time this season that the Trojans have won a one-run game over the Toreros ... Junior 1B Bill Peavey lifted the Trojans to victory with a two-out sacrifice fly. Peavey was 2-for-4 in the game with one RBI ... Seniors LF Josh Persell and SS Seth Davidson also had a hand in the USC win, both registering multi-hit games. Persell went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI, while Davidson was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI ... USC stands just behind Stanford in both Conference pitching (3.77 ERA) and fielding (.973). The Trojans pace the Pac-10 in strikeouts (459) and are second in opposing batting average (.253) and wins (33) ... USC will try to hold onto first-place in the Pac-10 standings this weekend. The Trojans return to Conference action, hosting Washington State. Last year USC swept the Cougars in Los Angeles.

WASHINGTON (27-16 Overall, 7-11 Pac-10)Last Week: Gonzaga W 11-6, OSU W 11-4, L 1-9, W 3-1 This Week: Portland, ASU

The Huskies did well last week, picking up a midweek win against Gonzaga before taking two out of three against Oregon State. Against the 'Zags, three different Huskies knocked out home runs. Sophomore Tyler Davidson, freshman Ben Johnson and senior Duggan Moran each hit a four-bagger ... In the first game against the Beavers, sophomore C Jefferson Thiel returned to play behind the dish for the first time since March 17. In that game he homered and threw out a would-be basestealer ... Junior RHP Shawn Kohn picked up his sixth win on the season. In his outing Friday night he allowed only one run on four hits while fanning 11 batters and giving no free passes. His 11 K's were the most of any Pac-10 pitcher last week ... Junior LHP Zack Daniels picked up the other Husky win against the Beavers. Daniels allowed only one run on five hits in seven innings of work. Daniels also helped out his cause at the plate. He went 2-for-3 with one run scored in the first plate appearances in his college career ... Davidson and junior 3B Michael Done also did well against the Beavers. Davidson hit .333 with a double, triple, two runs scored and 3 RBI. Done hit .455 also with two runs and three RBI. He added a double, home run and stolen base ... The Huskies play a two-game midweek series at home against Portland before taking on Arizona State.

WASHINGTON STATE (15-32 Overall, 6-12 Pac-10)Last Week: Lewis-Clark State L 14-15, 0-12, 1-5 This Week: at USC

Washington State struggled last week, losing three games to Lewis-Clark State. The Cougars were outscored 32-15 in the series ... The Cougars came back from a 10-run deficit in the first game against the Warriors, but stranded the tying run and fell 15-14 ... In the second game against Lewis-Clark State, Washington State failed to put a run on the board for the first time in over a year. The 12-0 shutout marked the first time the Cougars had been blanked since Apr. 9, 2000 ... Junior RHP Tyson Thompson was credited the loss in the final game against the Warriors, but he allowed just one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks ... Senior RF Mike Knight did well at the plate batting .429 (6-for-14) with three runs scored and three RBI. He also added a double and stolen base ... The Cougars will regroup and look to get back on the winning track against USC in Los Angeles next weekend.
