May 8, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford University senior wide receiver DeRonnie Pitts (Saginaw, MI/Saginaw HS) and tight end Russell Stewart (Bellevue, WA/Newport HS) have both signed National Football League free agent contracts. Pitts will join the San Diego Chargers, while Stewart signed with the Seattle Seahawks.
Pitts finished his collegiate career as one of the most prolific wide receivers in both Stanford and Pacific-10 Conference history. He finished second in the Cardinal record book in receptions (222) and receiving yards (2,942), third in career receiving touchdowns (24) and eighth in career all-purpose yards (3,463). In the Pac-10 record book, he finished his career ranked second in career receptions (228) and fourth in career receiving yards (3,023). He was named First Team All-Pac-10 in 2000, and Second Team All-Pac-10 in 1999.
Stewart was a three-year starter at tight end, and finished his Cardinal career with 31 career catches for 423 yards and three touchdowns. Despite missing five games because of an injury, he had a career-best 174 receiving yards as a senior. He also had a career-best 82 yards receiving in the Cardinal's upset win over Texas in September.
Two other members of the 2000 Cardinal are also headed to the National Football League, as defensive tackle Willie Howard (Mountain View, CA/Los Altos HS) was drafted in the second round by the Minnesota Vikings and outside linebacker Riall Johnson (Lynwood, WA/Mariner HS) was selected in the sixth round by the Cincinnati Bengals.
