Raquel Kops-Jones Earns Tennis Pac-10 Freshman of the Year
May 8, 2001
Two women's tennis players were named second team All-conference, as senior Anita Kurimay and freshman Raquel Kops-Jones garnered the honors for the Bears. Anita Kurimay fought through leg surgery during the early half of the season, making a strong recovery to regain her position at the top spot for the Bears. Playing only in dual match competition, Kurimay tallied a 10-4 record for Cal. Named an All-american at the end of last year, the native of Budapest, Hungary has led this youthful Bear squad to another berth in the NCAA tournament. The Bears will be the No. 1 seed in their region, as they will play host to three teams this Saturday, May 12.
In addition to being named second team All-conference, freshman Raquel Kops-Jones has also locked Women's Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors. Tallying a team-best 27-14 record thus far, Kops-Jones has played mostly at the No. 2 and 3 spots for the Bears, including six matches at the No. 1 spot to start the season in Anita Kurimay's absence. Kops-Jones recently made her way to the Pac-10 championship title match, after downing three opponents in straight sets. Falling short of the Pac-10 singles championship, Kops-Jones has also tallied a team-best tournament record of 14-7.
The No. 9 seed in the NCAA tournament, the Cal women will open up NCAA regional competition this Saturday, May 12, when they take on Loyola (Maryland) at 2 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Courts. Admission is $5 dollars for adults, $3 dollars for youths and students.
