Men's Tennis Travles To NCAA Regionals

This Week: The No. 37 University of Arizona men's tennis team (12-9 overall, 2-5 Pac-10) will make its first appearance since 1996 when it travels to Athens, Ga. to compete in the NCAA Regionals. The Cats will take on No. 26 Georgia Tech (16-6 overall) out of the Atlantic Coast Conference in the first round, Saturday, May 12 at 9:00 a.m. EDT. The birth in the field of 64 marks the Cats third appearance in school history. The University of Georgia will serve as tournament host.
The second-ranked Georgia Bulldgs will host No. 58 Furman at 1:00 p.m. EDT. The winners of Saturday's first round matches will compete on Sunday, May 13 at 12:00 p.m EDT.
The Cats come into the match with one ranked singles player and a ranked doubles team. Junior Steven Capriati is ranked No. 92 in singles. The duo of freshman Carl Hagman and Capriati are No. 48.
The Yellow Jackets come into the match with one ranked doubles pair. The duo of Roger Anderson and David Wright are No. 45.
Cats in the NCAA Championships: The Wildcats sport an all-time record of 1-2 in post season play. In 1995, the squad defeated Arizona Statein the first round, 4-3, before dropping a 4-0 decision to UCLA. In 1996, the Cats suffered an oppening round loss to UC-Santa Barbara, 4-2.
Fall Play: Junior Bruno Aropovic won the championships of flight two at the USD All-College Invitational in October. Aropovic compiled a 5-3 record in fall play.
Junior transfer Steven Capriati compiled a fall record of 4-2. He made it to the championships of flight one at the USD All-College Invitational before falling to Oliver Mailberger of San Diego State, 6-3, 6-2.
The Cats only returning starter from the 1999-2000 squad, sophomore Tom Lloyd, had a fall record of 4-4. Lloyd made it to the semifinals at the Thunderbirds Invitational, where he fell to Marko Gojanovic of Clemson, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
