Oregon Softball Splits Doubleheader With Portland State

EUGENE - The University of Oregon softball team split a doubleheader with Portland State in front of 227 fans at Howe Field Wednesday. The Ducks (28-37 overall, 1-17 Pac-10) dropped Game 1, 4-2, and came back with a 7-0 shut out in the second game.
'I'm happy with the fact that we were able to come out focused in Game 2 and pick up the win,' Oregon head coach Gamez said. 'Obviously we would have liked to get a sweep today, but we did a nice job of coming back.'
The Ducks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning in the first game on a two-RBI single by Lynsey Haij. Haij finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI. Portland State narrowed the gap with a run in the top of the fifth inning and added three runs in the sixth to take the lead. Oregon was unable to score in the final two innings and freshman pitcher Anissa Meashintubby (4-2) took the loss for Oregon. Portland State pitcher Morgan Seibert improved to 17-19 with the win.
Offensively, Oregon was led by sophomore Amber Hutchinson, who finished Game 1 3-for-3 with a run scored. Hutchison ended the day 5-for-6 with an RBI and one run scored to lead all Oregon batters.
Oregon came out strong in the second game, scoring three runs in the first inning. Junior pitcher Connie McMurren (9-17) held Portland State scoreless through seven innings and gave up just five hits and tallied seven strike outs, while walking just one batter.
The Ducks built on their lead, adding two runs in the third and sophomore Kate Peterson hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to extend Oregon's lead to 7-0. Peterson was 2-for-3 with a run scored a two RBI in the second game. Sophomore Lisa Wangler went 2-for-4 with a run scored and second baseman Alyssa Laux finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBI. The Ducks had 11 hits total in the game.
Oregon returns to Pac-10 play Friday, hosting No. 5 California at 2 p.m. No. 2 Stanford comes to Howe field for the regular season finale, a doubleheader beginning at noon.
