ASU's Kang Fires A 66 To Close The Gap On Arizona's Gulbis

May 11, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - - Arizona's Natalie Gulbis shot her second-consecutive 68 at the women's golf NCAA West Regional Championships, helping her Wildcats maintain a 15-stroke lead over second-place Stanford with a total of 579. The two schools shot 292 on Friday at the par-72 Trysting Tree Golf Club.

Stanford owns an eight-stroke lead over third-place Arizona State and Michigan State after the Cardinal put together a 594 over the first two rounds.

Gulbis, who sits at 8-under 136, owns a one-shot lead over Arizona State's Jimin Kang, who came up with the lowest round of the tournament with a 66 Friday. Kang, along with most of the field, was able to take advantage of favorable pin positions and pristine weather and course conditions, which led to lower scores for many of the teams Friday.

Saturday's final round figures to be a dogfight to make the cut for the NCAA Championships, as the top eight teams advance to the Championships at Duke University Golf Club May 22-25.

Tennessee sits in eighth place at 608 and has a two-stroke cushion over Washington, which is in ninth at 610. Oregon, at 612, Oregon State and Memphis State all are within striking distance of eighth-place. Oregon State and Memphis State are knotted in a tie for 11th at 617.

Arizona's Lorena Ochoa is four shots out of second at 141 after a 71 on Friday and stands alone in third. She owns a two-shot lead over Washington's Kelli Kamimura and Ohio State's Mollie Fankhauser, who are tied for fourth at 143.

Oregon State's Carina Olsson and Marylyn Brand are among a host of golfers tied for 30th, as the senior and freshman each put together rounds of 77 and 76 over the first two days for a 153.
