Beavers Beaten In 10 Innings

May 11, 2001

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Oregon State lost in extra innings for the first time this season Friday night, falling 5-3 to UCLA in 10 innings in Pacific-10 baseball at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins tied the game with a pair of runs in the ninth inning, then won it on Eric Reece's two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th.

OSU (29-21 overall, 9-10 Pacific-10) and UCLA (28-23, 7-12) continue their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340), and it will be televised live on Fox Sports Net.

On Friday, Oregon State got a strong starting pitching performance from Stephen Copeland as it built a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning. Thad Johnson, making a rare relief appearance, then worked his way out of one jam in the bottom of the eighth and was an instant away from getting out of another to secure the win for the Beavers in the bottom of the ninth.

However, the Bruins scored the tying run on a play that could have ended the game. With OSU leading 3-2, two out and pinch runner Randall Shelley at first base, Johnson coaxed a chopper over the mound off the bat of Josh Canales. Beaver shortstop Will Hudson raced across, grabbed the ball and made a strong throw to first with the ball arriving in what appeared to be a dead heat with Canales, Canales was called safe and Shelley had scored the tying run.

Canales eventually reached third base, but Johnson got Matt Pearl to ground out to Hudson to end the inning.

In the 10th, Brian Barden led off with a walk for OSU and was sacrificed to second, but Bruin reliever Mike Castillo got flyouts from Pat Stevens and Josh Carter to end the inning. After Johnson started the bottom of the 10th by striking out John Campanella, Josh Arhart lofted a single into leftfield and Reece homered to right-center.

Copeland pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing one run (one earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out three. Copeland allowed the run on a pair of hits in the first inning, then faced just one hitter over the minimum in the next 4 1/3 innings.

Johnson, who had been scheduled to start Sunday's series finale, took the loss. He had worked OSU out of trouble in the eighth as Copeland left the game with runners at first and second with one out, Johnson retired John Campanella on a groundout and fanned Arhart to end the inning with Oregon State still leading 3-1.

The Beavers had taken the lead with a pair of fifth-inning runs, as Josh Howard doubled to drive in one run and Barden added a sacrifice fly. OSU tacked on another run in the seventh when Eric Stark walked, was wild-pitched to second by UCLA starter Bobby Roe, sacrificed to third, and scored on another wild pitch.

Carter was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles for OSU, while Curtis Davis extended his hitting streak to seven games by going 2-for-4. OSU's record in extra-inning games dropped to 2-1 for the season.
