No. 14 Softball Tops No. 4 Stanford, 1-0
May 11, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sophomore Steph Adams' second inning home run provided all of the scoring as the No. 14 ranked Oregon State softball team topped No. 4 Stanford, 1-0 on Friday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex.
With the victory, the Beavers improve to 41-22-1 on the season and 8-10 in the Pacific-10 Conference while the Cardinal fall to 46-13-1 and 9-10 in Pac-10 play.
In a game dominated by both pitchers, the only run crossed the plate when Adams sent a two-out, 2-1 pitch over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the second.
The home run was Adams' team-leading seventh of the season and her second game-winner.
'This was a very tight ball game,' commented OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Both teams were well matched on the mound and defensively.'
Oregon State pitcher Crystal Draper earned her 11th shutout of the season, allowing just five hits and striking out five on the way to improving to 27-10 on the season.
'Crystal did a great job, and Steph's home run was a nice way for us to get on the board,' said Walker.
The Cardinal had runners in scoring position in three different innings but Draper recorded key outs and Stanford left six players stranded.
Stanford hurler Dana Sorensen (21-3), making her first start since April 14, scattered four hits and struck out nine in the losing effort.
'It's good to play well against a team of Stanford's caliber and get a win at home,' said Walker. 'It's nice for our seniors to pick up a big victory in their last home weekend.'
The Beavers conclude the regular season Saturday with a double-header against No. 6 California. OSU seniors Shawna Feldt and Brooke Rutschman will be honored before the first game and student assistant coach Tarrah Beyster's #00 jersey will be retired prior to the start of game-two. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
