Lorenzo Leads Pac-10 Decathlon After First Day

BERKELEY, Calif. - University of Oregon junior Santiago Lorenzo posted a strong opening day Saturday at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships Decathlon, leading the competition with a score of 3,920 points. Oregon junior Billy Pappas (fourth, 3,721) and sophomore Jason Slye (ninth, 3,357) were also in scoring contention at the halfway point.

The two-time Pac-10 runner-up Lorenzo finished top three in all of five of Saturday's events, including first in both the long jump (22-5.75) and the 400 (48.97). He also ranked second in both the shot put (44-0) and 100 (11.10), and third in high jump (6-4.25).

Pappas finished first in the shot put (44-3.5), second in long jump (22-9), and third in high jump (6-2). Slye's highest finish was in the 100 (fifth, 11.25).

Washington State's Steve Dwyer trails in second place overall (3,770) and claimed first in the high jump (6-9).

The 10-event competition wraps up Sunday, as the 110 hurdles start the day's events at 11 a.m., followed by the discus at 12:30 p.m., pole vault at 2:00 p.m., javelin at 4:00 p.m. and 1,500 at 5:15 p.m.

Kenyon Finishes First Day of Pacific-10 Heptathlon Championships in Fifth

BERKELEY, Calif. - University of Oregon junior Jenny Kenyon opened the first day of the Pacific-10 Conference Championships Heptathlon in fifth place (2,990 points) after four events Saturday at the University of California's Edwards Stadium.

A two-time Pac-10 score prior, Kenyon ranked second Saturday in the shot put (36-2), fifth in the 200 (25.68), sixth in the high jump (5-0.5) and seventh in the 100 hurdles (14.54).

Duck freshman Ann Sullivan finished day one in seventh place with 2,952 points, finishing second in both the 200 (25.18) and the 100 hurdles (14.44), fifth in the shot put (33-0.25) and ninth in the high jump (4-11.5).

Washington State's Whitney Evans finished the first day of competition in first place with 3,318 points, only 13 points ahead of Julie Tinker (3,305) of Stanford. Evans claimed first place in the high jump (5-11.25), second in the 100 (14.44), third in the shot put (34-9.5) and fourth in the 200 (25.53), while Tinker finished second in both the 100 Hurdles (14.44) and high jump (5-10).

The seven-event competition concludes Sunday and features the long jump at 11:30 a.m., javelin at 1:15 p.m., and 800 at 2:30 p.m.
