Oklahoma State Beats Florida 4-1 In First Round Of NCAA Tournament
May 12, 2001
STANFORD, CA - Oklahoma State University (14-8) won three crucial tiebreaker en routes to a 4-1 victory over the 31st-ranked University of Florida (9-17) in the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Team Championships on Saturday morning at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
The Cowboys, who have won eight of their last nine, will meet the winner of Saturday afternoon's match between the University of Pacific and Stanford on Sunday at noon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
'This was a really tight match,' Oklahoma State head coach James Wadley said. 'One or two shots could have changed the outcome of the match. This was much closer than the 4-1 score.'
Oklahoma State pulled out the victory thanks to a pair of upset wins from senior Chris Bates (Brisbane, Australia/St. Joseph's). Bates, who is the only senior on the Oklahoma State roster, helped give the Cowboys a 1-0 lead when he teamed with Frantisek Krepelka (Kosice, Slovakia/Gymnazium Postova) to upset 23rd-ranked Nathan Overholser (Okemos, MI/Okemos HS) and Jeremy Wurtzman (Rochester, NY/Brickhouse Academy) 9-8 at No. 1 doubles. Bates and Krepelka trailed 5-3 in the tiebreaker, but rallied to win the next four points to clinch the doubles victory. In singles, Bates gave Oklahoma State a 3-1 lead with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 upset win over the 62nd-ranked Wurtzman at No. 2.
'Chris Bates really came through for us,' Wadley said. 'He came through with the service break in the doubles tiebreaker, and then came back in singles against one of their strongest players. He hurt his back a little bit in singles, but still managed to come back and win.'
The Cowboys then clinched the victory thanks to a pair of crucial tiebreak victories from Krepelka at No. 4 singles. Krepelka and Troy Hahn (Indianapolis, IN/North Central HS) went to tiebreakers in both sets, with the OSU sophomore winning the first 9-7 and the second 7-5.
