Oregon Softball Ends Season With Losses To No. 4 Stanford

EUGENE - The University of Oregon softball dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 4 Stanford in front of 276 fans at Howe Field Saturday. The Ducks lost Game 1, 6-0 before falling 5-1 in the second game to finish the season 28-40 overall 1-20 Pac-10. Stanford improves 48-13-1, 11-10 heading into the postseason.
'This has been a very difficult season,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'We were hoping to end it on a positive note for our seniors, but unfortunately, it didn't work out that way.'
Stanford took the early lead in Game 1 when Jessica Mendoza doubled to center field. Mendoza advanced to third on a wild pitch and Kira Ching scored Mendoza on a sacrifice fly to center field. The Cardinal added another run in the top of the third inning to extend their lead, 2-0.
Behind strong pitching from Stanford's Dana Sorensen (22-3) and Tori Nyberg, the Cardinal were able to keep Oregon from getting on the board. Sorensen struck out seven and gave up just two hits in five innings pitched to clinch the win. The Stanford offense added two runs in the fourth and sixth innings to extend its lead heading into the seventh inning. Neither team scored in the seventh.
Sophomore Lisa Wangler (5-11) took the loss for Oregon.
In Game 2, Stanford had the early lead again, as it scored three runs in the top of the first inning. The Cardinal added two more runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Michelle Thiry.
Oregon finally scored in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alicia Mickes singled up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman catcher Samantha Shutes. Wangler's single scored Mickes to put Oregon on the board.
Oregon went scoreless in the final two innings as Stanford held on for the sweep. Maureen LeCocq (16-7) got the win, while Oregon freshman Anissa Meashintubby (4-3) took the loss.
