May 13, 2001
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --The 18th-ranked Washington men's tennis team posted a 4-1 victory over Notre Dame in the second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Championships on the campus of Harvard University to earn the Regional Championship and advance to the round of 16 in Athens, Georgia.
'I'm on top of the world,' said seventh year head coach Matt Anger. 'We have been moving forward as a program, but we have never made it to the round of 16 before and that has been our goal from day one. I'm especially happy because we've got three seniors who really deserve this.'
Senior duo Jeremy Berman and Andy Posavac clinched the doubles point as they defeated Notre Dame's duo of Talarico/Taborga, 8-6, in the No. 1 position. Matt Hanlin and Andrej Bizjak earned the other doubles victory to give Washington the point with the win over Haddock/Farrell, 8-2. Dillon Ruby and Ari Strasberg, playing in the No. 2 position, lost to Smith/Malhame in a tight match, 8-7.
In singles play, No. 55 Matt Hanlin earned his second win in the postseason, defeating No. 79 Casey Smith in two sets, 6-0, 6-4. Hanlin improves his overall season record to 23-11. Sophomore Ari Strasberg faced Brian Farrell in the fifth position and took care of him in two quick sets, 6-1, 6-0. Strasberg is now 27-8 on the year.
After sitting out the first round, Andy Posavac played in the No. 4 position and clinched the win for the Huskies, defeating Aaron Talarico, 6-1, 6-3. Andrej Bizjak and Dillon Ruby were unable to finish their matches and Jeremy Berman was defeated in two sets by Luis Haddock, 6-2, 6-3.
The 15th-seeded Huskies (20-7, 3-4) will face conference opponent and No. 2 seed UCLA (22-2, 6-1) on Saturday, May 19.
'UCLA has been the best throughout the year, so it's going to be a tough match,' said Anger. 'We have played well against them this year so we'll see what happens. I'm very eager to play them and I know our guys are too. We came through the Pac-10 Conference which has prepared us well.'
