May 13, 2001

BERKELEY, Calif. - University of Oregon junior Jenny Kenyon and freshman Ann Sullivan kicked the Pac-10 Championships off with fifth- and sixth-place finishes in the heptathlon with scores of 4,911 and 4,874 points, respectively.

Washington State's Ellannee Richardson won two final day events - the javelin (143-2) and 800 (2:16.58) - en route to the overall win (5,578 points). Cougar teammate Whitney Evans and Stanford's Julie Tinker followed in second and third places with 5,546 and 5,432 points, respectively.

Kenyon posted second-day marks of 16-9 1/4 in the long jump, 102-4 in the javelin and 2:19.28 in the 800. Sullivan's final day totals included 17-11 3/4 in the long jump, 95-2 in the javelin and 2:24.01 in the 800.

Kenyon's finish was her third straight scoring honor at the league finale after finishing fourth in 2000 and sixth in 1999. Sullivan's seven-event effort was her third of the season and a personal best score, after competing at the Azusa Pacific (4,792) and Linfield Heptathlons.

As a result of the Ducks' duo, Oregon is tied for second place with seven points with Stanford, as Washington State leads the team race with 18 points.

Looking ahead, the Duck men and women's track and field teams return to Berkeley, Calif., to compete at the rest of the events, Saturday-Sunday, May 19-20 at Edwards Stadium.

Lorenzo and Pappas Take First and Third in Pac-10 Decathlon

On the men's side, Duck juniors Santiago Lorenzo and Billy Pappas wrapped up final-day action at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships Decathlon, with first- and third-place scores of 7,617 and 7,342 points, respectively.

Stanford's Jason Goff finished between the two Ducks in second place (7,428), while Oregon's other entrant, sophomore Jason Slye, just missed scoring with a ninth-place finish (6,631) in his conference debut.

Lorenzo's final day marks were 15.06 in the 110 hurdles, 125-0 in the discus, 15-7 in the pole vault, 186-1 in the javelin and 4:36.01 in the 1,500. Pappas posted marks of 14.79 in the 110 hurdles, 128-9 in the discus, 14-3 1/4 in the pole vault, 183-2 in the javelin and 4:35.95 in the 1,500. Slye's final-day marks were 15.45 in the 110 hurdles, 104-8 in the discus, 15-11 in the pole vault, 135-10 in the javelin, and 4:45.07 in the 1,500.

Among the individual events, Lorenzo ranked second in the javelin and pole vault, and third in the 110 hurdles and discus, Slye was the top scorer in the pole vault, and Pappas stood second in the 110 hurdles and discus and third in the javelin.

As a result of the Ducks' leading duo, Oregon leads the conference championships team race after one event with 16 points, ahead of Stanford (second, 8) and USC (third, 7).

On the national scene, Pappas' mark easily met the NCAA provisional mark of 7,150 points, and may qualify him for the upcoming NCAA Championships in Eugene (5/30-31). Based on last week's national list, his mark could put him among the top-15 nationally, although several conferences will hold their decathlons next weekend.

Ultimately, Pappas will have to wait two weeks to hear on his final status, with the NCAA Championships committee usually inviting anywhere from 16-18 athletes.

Lorenzo is already automatically qualified for the collegiate finale with his 7,726 personal best from the Texas Relays in April.

Looking ahead, the Duck men and women's track and field teams return to Berkeley, Calif., to compete at the rest of the events, Saturday-Sunday, May 19-20 at Edwards Stadium.
