Men's Tennis Has Georgia On Its Minds
May 13, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - The second-ranked Stanford University men's tennis team (23-1) advanced to the NCAA Team Championships in Athens, Georgia with a 4-0 second round victory over 37th-ranked Oklahoma State (14-9) on Sunday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Stanford has now won eight straight NCAA matches, including seven by a 4-0 count.
The final four rounds of the NCAA Men's Tennis Team Championships will be held at the University of Georgia on May 19-22. The defending NCAA Champion Cardinal opens play in Athens on Saturday, May 19 against 20th-ranked Pepperdine University (19-7) in the round of 16. In their earlier meeting this season, the Cardinal defeated the Waves 5-2 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
'We were better and sharper than we were yesterday (4-0 win over Pacific),' Stanford head coach Dick Gould said. 'The guys did a great job of focusing on what they needed to do. We barely beat Pepperdine here earlier this year, and I expect a great match on a neutral court.'
Fittingly, it was Stanford's senior class of Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS), Alex Kim (Potomac, Md/Winston Churchill HS) and Scotty Scott (Belvedere, CA/Pinewood School) that wrapped up the win over the Cowboys. Sunday's win helped the trio complete their collegiate home careers with a perfect 54-0 record.
Ansari and Scott gave Stanford a 1-0 lead by clinching the doubles point. The 41st-ranked duo wrapped up doubles competition by defeating Jiri Jezek (Pribram, Czech Republic/Centrum Odborne) and Anthony Zafiris (Melbourne, Australia/Essendon Keilor) 8-5 at No. 3.
Ansari then put the Cardinal up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Justin Ewert (Dallas, TX/Garland HS) at No. 6 singles. After K.J. Hippensteel wrapped up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Chris Bates (Brisbane, Australia/St. Joseph's) at No. 2, Kim clinched the dual victory with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Matt Prentice (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) at No. 1.
