Men's Varsity Eight Third At Pac-10s

CORVALLIS, Ore. - - The Oregon State men's varsity eight rowed one of its strongest races of the year on Sunday, as the Beavers finished third at the Pacific-10 Championships on the 2,000-meter Lake Natoma course in Sacramento.

The 12-ranked Beavers finished in 6:03.00 and came within 1.11 seconds of knocking off No. 5 Washington, as the two crews battled the entire length of the course. The Beavers never let the UW boat gain more than a three seat lead and were within a nose at the 1,500-meter mark. UW held off OSU's late push though and crossed the line in 6:01.89.

California, the country's top-ranked crew, won easily with an open-water win in a time of 5:51.79.

The varsity eight won its heat race to earn its lane in the Grand Final, edging out Stanford by over three seconds in 6:17.79.

The junior varsity was a little over seven seconds off Washington's pace in the qualifying heat, as the Beavers took second to advance to the Grand Final, where they turned in a time of 6:26.00 to finish third. Cal took care of Washington by more than seven seconds with a time of 6:03.10 to earn the win.

OSU beat San Diego State and took fifth in the varsity four race, as the Beavers finished in 7:13.70. California, whose program features nine Olympians, ran away with the win in 6:40.70, which was nearly 13 seconds better than Washington's 6:53.39.

The novice eight finished third in its Grand Final, well ahead of Cal-Davis, Stanford and Cal-Santa Barbara. OSU's time of 6:18.29 put them well behind first-place Washington and second-place California, as Washington pulled off the upset in 6:02.00 to win by 3.20 seconds.The novice eight took care of business in its heat race as it blew by Stanford to win by four lengths in 6:25.00.
