Softball Drops Doubleheader to UCLA
May 13, 2001
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The ninth-ranked Arizona State softball team (34-20, 9-12 Pac-10) dropped a doubleheader to second-ranked UCLA (55-5, 16-5 Pac-10), 1-0 and 8-6 in eight innings tonight at Farrington Stadium.
In game one, a UCLA run in the fourth inning was all the scoring that took place. After loading the bases, Amanda Freed reached on an error, scoring Tairia Mims from third base.
The Sun Devils had several chances to score, but were unable to plate any runners as they stranded seven on base. Erica Beach took the loss, limiting the Bruins to five hits and no earned runs. UCLA's Courtney Dale earned the win also allowing five hits. Kristen Swetel led ASU with a 2-for-3 game with one double.
In the second game, which lasted 2:45 minutes, ASU's four run rally in the bottom of the seventh fell short as the Bruins scored twice in the eighth inning to seal the win.
UCLA posted three runs in the first, one in the third, fourth and seventh innings, before scoring the final two in the extra frame.
ASU's Phelan Wright continued her hot hitting as she belted her second home run in as many days over the left field wall. ASU would get another run back in the fifth inning on a Kara Brun RBI single to center field.
ASU then rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at six apiece. After two straight singles by Missy Hixon and Nichole Thompson, followed by a wild pitch, Brun cracked a double to center, scoring both runners. Beach then doubled to left field to drive in another run, while Alicia Flanagan came home on another wild pitch for the final run.
However, UCLA scored once on a sacrifice fly and the final run on a Stacey Nuveman single to center field.
Arizona State will now wait and see who and where they will play as the 48-team field will be announced on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
