Stanford's Gabe Jennings Runs the Fastest 800 Meters By An American in U.S. in 2001

Stanford, Ca - Gabe Jennings, a Stanford Olympian, ran the fastest 800 meters by an American in the United States this year with a time of 1:46.83 to highlight the Cardinal Qualifier on Sunday night at Cobb Track & Angell Field.

Jennings ran a 1:46.83, a career-best and third all-time in the Stanford record book. Jennings edged fellow Stanford Olympian Michael Stember at the tape as Stember ran a 1:47.17, a season-best. Jennings and Stember each posted NCAA outdoor qualifying times.

Ryan Carroll (800 meters, 1:48.42, #7 all-time at Stanford), Jesse Thomas (3,000 meter steeplechase, 8:49.19, #5 all-time at Stanford), Ashley Couper (800 meters, 2:05.82, #5 all-time at Stanford), Maurica Carlucci (1,500 meters, 4:22.91) and Mariel Ettinger (5,000 meters, 16:43.64) were all NCAA provisional qualifiers.

Kara Grgas-Wheeler of Colorado ran the fastest 5,000 meters in the United States for a collegiate runner this year with a time of 15:41.78.

In Berkeley, Jason Goff compiled a career-high 7,428 points to finish in second place at the 2001 Pacific-10 Decathlon Championships on Sunday at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field.

Goff's point total is third best all-time at Stanford, and qualifies him provisionally for the NCAA Championships in Eugene.

Goff won two of the five events on Sunday, the discus (131-3) and the javelin (195-8). Oregon's Santiago Lorenzo won the conference title with 7,617 points.

Stanford's Julie Tinker finished third in the Pacific-10 Heptathlon Championships with a career-best 5,432 points. That point total qualifies provisionally for the NCAA Championships in Eugene. Her point total is also third-best all-time at Stanford. Tinker won the long jump with a leap of 19-7 1/2.

Cardinal freshman Lillian Bush placed eighth with a career-best 4,811.

Ellannee Richardson of Washington State won the conference heptathlon with 5,578 points.

Goff's second place finish gives Stanford eight points heading into the main portion of the Pacific-10 Championships next weekend at California. Tinker's third place finish gives the Cardinal women six points in the team competition.
