May 14, 2001
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Washington State Cougar baseball team once again struggled with USC pitching as the Cougs lost the series finale against the Trojans 5-1 Monday afternoon at Dedeaux Field. WSU falls to 15-35 with the loss (6-15 in Pac-10) while USC once again took a two-game lead over Stanford atop the Pac-10, improving its record to 36-16, 16-5 in conference play.
Cougar left fielder Justin Williams scored Washington State's only run in the eighth inning as center fielder Evan Hecker reached on an error by Trojan second baseman Andy Torres. The error enabled Williams to score and allowed catcher Jon Baeder advance from first to third on the play after he singled two batters earlier.
The Trojans broke open a tight 2-0 game by scoring three runs in the sixth inning off Cougar starter Jamin Svendsen to take a five run advantage. In five innings of work, Svendsen allowed five runs, of which four were earned, on eight hits while retiring three batters on strikes. Zach Fisher pitched two scoreless innings after relieving Svendsen in the sixth and Donny Davis faced the minimum number of batters in the eighth, recording the final out on a pickoff.
USC starter Anthony Reyes pitched a complete game and allowed five hits and struck out 12 hitters to earn his third win of the season. Reyes recorded five 1-2-3 innings and struck out the side twice to keep WSU's bats silent for most of the game.
The next game for the Cougs will be on the road against Lewis-Clark State at Harris Field Wednesday, May 16. The game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
