Malone and Lorenzo Named Pac-10 Athletes of Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pacific-10 Conference announced Monday that a pair of Ducks - freshmanSarah Malone and junior Santiago Lorenzo - were honored as Pac-10 Track andField Athletes of the Week for the men's and women's field event categories.

At the Oregon Twilight last weekend at Hayward Field, Malone posted apersonal best javelin throw of 53.04m/174-0, and recorded her first NCAAautomatic qualifying mark this season. The Newburg, Ore., native now rankssecond nationally among collegians, and her winning mark broke her formerschool record of 169-3 set two weeks before at the Oregon Invitational.

Lorenzo claimed Oregon's eighth conference crown in the decathlon with atotal of 7,617 points at the Pac-10 Multi Event Championships in Berkeley,Calif. The Buenos Aires, Argentina native led competitors in the long jump(6.85m/22-5 3/4) and 400 meters (48.97), ranked second in the javelin, polevault, shot put (13.41m/44-0) and 100 meters (11.10), and stood third inthe 110 hurdles, discus and high jump (1.94m/6-4 1/4).

Other weekly honors went to Stanford's Gabe Jennings (800) and WashingtonState's Ellannee Richardson (heptathlon).

In the honor's seasonal debut last month, Lorenzo picked up similar honorsfor the men's track category based on his Texas Relays personal best(first, 7,726) - a mark that still ranks him fourth nationally. Theaccolade also marked a one-year anniversary after conference field eventhonors from the 2000 Texas Relays (third, then-PR 7,580).

Last week, Duck junior Simon Kimata was honored in the men's trackcategory based on his performance at the Texas Invitational in Austin(5/4). The junior transfer from South Plains CC clocked his first NCAAqualifying mark (1:47.92) en route to the win in the 800 meters -- alsobreaking the track record at three-year-old Mike A. Myers Stadium. In themost current national and conference rankings, he stands 11th and third,respectively, and is seventh on Oregon's all-time list.

The previous week, redshirt sophomore John Stiegeler received similarhonors for the field event category for his second of three meets above the240-foot mark in the javelin. The Coos Bay, Ore., native took second at theprevious Saturday's Oregon Invite (4/28) with a heave of 73.74 meters(241-11), trailing only Eastern Washington's Ryan Cole (first, 244-7).

After April's opening weekend, Stiegeler earned his initial honor for hisseven-foot season best (245-9) that pushed him to first on the nationalcollegiate list - a position he still holds. He finished second that day atthe Texas Relays behind German Olympian Boris Henry who hurled the worldleader at the time (283-5). Stiegeler's throw moved him to second all-timefor the Ducks behind 1992 NCAA champion Art Skipper (251-8) and ranks himfifth on the current U.S. list in 2001.
