2001 UCLA Women's/Men's Track & Field Release

Jeanette Bolden's UCLA women's team and Art Venegas' Bruin men's squad willcompete this weekend at the 2001 Pacific-10 T & F Championships, in Berkeley andhosted by the University of California (42nd annual men, 15th annual women).Scoring is 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

The Bruin women have won the conference championship 11 times. In thelast seven seasons under Bolden, UCLA has won on six occasions, including thelast four years in a row.

UCLA's men have won the league title 16 times, including six occasionsin the 1990s (1992-93-94-95-96-98).

On Saturday (May 19) at Edwards Stadium, the field events will beginat 10 a.m. and the running events at 1 p.m., concluding at 5:30 p.m. with thewomen's and men's 10,000m finals. On Saturday, there are 12 finals.

On Sunday (May 20, all finals), field events begin at 9:30 a.m. andtrack events at 1 p.m. The meet will end at 4:15 p.m. with the running of thewomen's and men's 4 X 400m relays.

The Pac-10 Multi-event Championships were held last weekend (May12-13) at Cal, with Oregon's Santiago Lorenzo winning the decathlon (7,617, 10team points for the Ducks) and Washington State's Ellannee Richardson (5,578points) and Whitney Evans (5,546 points) finishing one-two in the heptathlon,giving the Cougars 18 team points.

National Rankings

In last week's (May 7, this week's new rankings come out on Tuesday,May 15) national rankings, Trackwire had the UCLA women again at No. 1 (82points). In the eight weeks of outdoor rankings, the Bruin women have been No. 1on six occasions, including the last four weeks. The Bruin men have not beenranked for the last two weeks.

In the IAAF-USATF Team Power Rankings (May 7), the UCLA women werestill No. 1 (400.82 points) and the Bruin men were No. 3 (360.73).

Trackwire is based upon predictions as to how teams will score at the2001 NCAA Outdoor (May 30-June 2, Eugene, OR) and the Team Power Ranking iscomputer scoring based on a team's individual marks and dual meet strength.

Looking Ahead (Wed.-Sat., May 30-June 2)

The 2001 NCAA Outdoor T & F Championships will be held May 30-June 2(Wed.-Sat.) in Eugene and hosted by the University of Oregon. Scoring will be10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

Last winter, the UCLA women won the 2001 NCAA Indoor title (for thesecond year in a row). The Bruin women are looking to become the third women'steam in collegiate track and field history to win both the NCAA Outdoor andIndoor crowns in the same season (LSU did it eight times,1997-96-95-94-93-91-89-87 and Texas on three occasions, 1999-98-86).

The UCLA women have won the NCAA Outdoor twice (the Bruins won thefirst two women's NCAA Outdoor meets in 1983-82). During Bolden's seven seasonsas head coach, the Bruin women have finished in the Top three at the NCAAOutdoor on six occasions, including second-place finishes in 1999-98-95 (theUCLA women placed third in 2000-97-94).

The Bruin men have won the NCAA Outdoor twice (1988-87). In the 1990s,the UCLA men finished in the Top 10 on seven occasions (1998-97-96-95-93-92-90).
