Fisher Named ITA West Region Rookie of the Year
May 15, 2001
Princeton, NJ -- UCLA freshman tennis player Lauren Fisher was named ITA West Region Rookie of the Year on Tuesday. She is now eligible, along with eight other regional winners, for the ITA National Rookie of the Year award, to be presented on May 20 in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
Fisher, out of Woodland Hills HS in Pittsburgh, Pa., enjoyed a solid freshman season at UCLA. She is one of UCLA's top doubles players, teaming with partner Petya Marinova to comprise one of the top teams in the nation. The duo is currently ranked No. 18 in the nation and owns an overall record of 21-14. Last weekend in the NCAA Regional Finals in Fresno, Calif., Fisher and Marinova defeated sixth-ranked Simone Jardim/Kim Niggemeyer of Fresno State, helping the Bruins advance to the NCAA Team Championships this weekend in Stone Mountain, Ga.
The duo was also selected to compete in the NCAA Individual Championships, May 21-25 in Stone Mountain.
Fisher owns a 19-18 overall singles record, seeing most of her time at the Nos. 3 and 4 positions. She will be at No. 3 singles when the Bruins take on No. 6 Vanderbilt in the round of 16 this Thursday.
This award for Fisher gives UCLA back-to-back honors in this category, as Bruin sophomore Sara Walker was named ITA West Region Rookie of the Year last season.
