FINAL REGULAR SEASON GAMES ON TAPUSC needs only two more Pac-10 wins to take the title
USC is tabbed as the top team in the country for the first time this season by Collegiate Baseball. Baseball America and Baseball Weekly rank the Trojans at No. 2 ... USC will try to secure its first Pac-10 Championship since the Northern and Southern Divisions merged in 1999. USC won four titles in the '90s ... Pac-10 play has WASHINGTON visiting ARIZONA, UCLA at ARIZONA STATE, USC at OREGON STATE and STANFORD at WASHINGTON ... All teams will be playing their best ball this weekend as the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship selections will be made Monday.

The Wildcats took one game from Stanford at Sunken Diamond last weekend, a 5-4 win Saturday ... Arizona received solid pitching performances from freshmen right-handers Sean Rierson and Brian Anderson and senior RHP Daryl DeSalvo. Through seven innings, Rierson allowed just two runs on eight hits with no walks and one strikeout. Anderson earned the save and worked out of two bases loaded situations. He also went 2-for-4 with a home run ... The opening game of the series was also a one-run contest. Senior 3B Erik Torres knocked out three doubles in that game, becoming the first Wildcat player to hit three two-baggers in a game since 1998 ... The Pac-10 Conference's leading power-hitter, Shelley Duncan, knocked out another record last weekend. With his 18th career home run in Conference games, Duncan now holds the record for most round-trippers in a career against Pac-10 foes. He is also just one homer shy of breaking Arizona's single-season record of 23 home runs, he leads the Pac-10 with 22 ... The Wildcats close out their season at home this weekend, hosting Washington. A sweep of the Huskies would secure Arizona a .500 Conference record and possible NCAA postseason berth.
ARIZONA STATE (34-16-1, Overall, 12-9 Pac-10)Last Week: WASH W 11-6/10 inn, W 7-3 This Week: at Nevada, UCLA
ASU came from its weekend off ready to play and did just that, sweeping Washington in Seattle. With the sweep, ASU is in fourth place in the Conference standings with a 12-9 record. It was the Sun Devils first Pac-10 sweep this season ... The Sun Devils got their first victory of the series in dramatic fashion Friday afternoon. Junior CF Chris Duffy hit a grand slam in the top of the 10th inning and sophomore SS Dennis Wyrick knocked in the game-winning run. The extra-inning contest marked the fifth game ASU has played past the ninth inning in its last 10 games ... Friday's game also marked a milestone for head coach Pat Murphy. It was his 100th Pac-10 victory ... ASU got great pitching performances from out of the bullpen. In the first game of the series, senior lefty Drew Friedberg, freshman RHP Aaron Klusman and junior RHP Andy Torres combined to allow only one run in 5.2 innings pitched. In the second game, starter junior LHP Jon Switzer picked up his first win since Mar. 24 after allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in five innings pitched. Friedberg and Klusman gave up just one unearned run and three hits in four innings. Klusman picked up the save after sealing the victory over the final three frames. Monday's game featured a one-run, five-hitter from senior RHP Eric Doble in his third start of the season ... The Sun Devil bats were alive in the Northwest as they outscored the Huskies, 35-10. ASU capped their 11-6 and 7-3 wins with a 17-1 victory in the final game ... Senior C Casey Myers has been announced as one of 10 semi-finalists for the Johnny Bench award and one of 12 semi-finalists for the Smith Award ... ASU plays a midweek game against Nevada and hosts UCLA for its final series this weekend.
CALIFORNIA (33-23 Overall, 14-10 Pac-10)Last Week: Saint Mary's L 4-9, Santa Clara W 6-5, Kansas State W 6-4, 16-10
The Golden Bears made a push for a postseason selection with a resounding 3-1 record over their final week of play. Cal defeated Santa Clara and took two games at Kansas State to finish with a 33-23 overall record. The 33 wins are the most regular season wins for Cal since 1991. The Bears' 14-10 Conference record places them in third in the Pac-10 ... Freshman 3B Conor Jackson and junior RHP Trevor Hutchinson both played well last week. In the four games, Jackson went 10-for-19 (.526) with five runs, two doubles, two home runs and three RBI. He finished the regular season on a seven-game hitting streak and is batting .300 with a team-leading 36 walks. Hutchinson pitched in two games last week. In his outing against Santa Clara, Hutchinson pitched in relief for the first time since his freshman year and earned the save. He allowed just one hit over 1.1 innings. Against Kansas State he picked up the win allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in seven innings ... With his home run against Kansas State, senior 1B Clint Hoover is fifth on both the Bears all-time home run (38) and RBI lists (152) ... Senior reliever David Cash picked up both a save and win against Kansas State. With 23 career wins, Cash is fifth on Cal's all-time win list. He stands at 10-3 on the season and leads Bears pitchers with 87 K's in 88.1 innings ... With its season completed, Cal will wait for Monday when the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament selections are announced. The Bears' last tourney appearance was 1995.
OREGON STATE (30-22 Overall, 10-11 Pac-10)Last Week: UCLA L 3-5/10 inn, L 6-7/11 inn, W 11-8 This Week: USC
Oregon State had a tough time in Los Angeles last week against UCLA, picking up just one win. The Beavers will have to take two games from USC this week to end up with a .500 Conference record ... OSU matched UCLA offensively as each school scored 20 runs over the three games. The Beavers, however, lost ninth-inning leads and were unable to pull out extra-inning contests in the first two games ... Stephen Copeland had an impressive outing in the first game of the series, allowing only one run on six hits through 7.1 innings pitched. He ended up with a no-decision after the Beavers lost their first extra-inning game of the season ... Sophomore 3B Brian Barden set OSU's single-season hit record after recording his 77th hit of the year Saturday. He also set the single-season record for at-bats (215). Barden leads the team with 79 hits, 50 runs scored and 55 RBI ... The Beavers' win in their final game against the Bruins gave them their 30th overall and 10th Pac-10 victory. OSU has won 30 games in four of the last six seasons. The 10 Pac-10 wins are the most for the Beavers since the Pac-10 merged the Northern and Southern Divisions in 1999.
STANFORD (39-14 Overall, 14-7 Pac-10)Last Week: Cal Poly W 11-10, San Francisco W 8-6, ARIZ W 6-5, L 4-5, W 8-2 This Week: at WSU
Stanford's Sunken Diamond has been selected as one of 16 regional sites for the 2001 NCAA Baseball Championships. The first-round regional takes place May 25-27. The selection marks the sixth consecutive time the Cardinal has been a host, dating back to 1995. It is their 10th overall host selection in school history ... Stanford did well last week, posting a 4-1 record. Their only falter was a 5-4 loss to Arizona ... The Cardinal won its fourth Pac-10 series this season and has won six of its last 10 games ... Junior 2B Chris O'Riordan was a tough out at the plate last week. He batted .619 (13-for-21) with nine runs scored, two doubles, a home run and 3 RBI. O'Riordan leads the team with 80 hits and 57 RBI ... Sophomore C Ryan Garko also did well scoring two runs and driving in three on four hits against the 'Cats. Garko is currently on a career-high 12-game hitting streak ... The Cardinal continues to pace the Pac-10 in pitching. Stanford boasts a team ERA of 3.42. Three pitchers with at least 10 appearances, junior RHP J.D. Willcox (3-0, 2.10), sophomore righthanders Jeremy Guthrie (9-4, 2.71) and Ryan McCally (2-1, 2.89), have ERA's under 3.00. Junior RHP Jeff Bruksch is just over with a 3.04 ERA ... Guthrie earned his ninth win of the season in Stanford's first win over the Wildcats. He allowed five runs on eight hits with eight K's and no walks in seven innings pitched. Willcox picked up his fourth save in that contest giving up two hits, while striking out three in two innings of work ... The Cardinal hits the road for their final series, taking on Washington State. Stanford is currently two games behind USC, but still has a chance to win the Pac-10 title depending on how the weekend play pans out.
UCLA (29-24 Overall, 8-13 Pac-10)Last Week: Cal St. Fullerton W 9-3, OSU W 5-3/10 inn, W 7-6/11 inn, L 8-11 This Week: at UC Santa Barbara, at ASU
The Bruins played well last week, beating the then-No. 1 team in the nation, Cal State Fullerton and taking two from Oregon State at home. UCLA has knocked off three No. 1 teams this season ... Senior RHP Jon Brandt pitched well against the Titans allowing no runs on one hit with three K's and three walks in four innings pitched ... The Bruins won the first two games against Oregon State by virtue of late-inning clutch hits. Senior 1B Eric Reece hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to lead UCLA to its first victory. After tying the game three different times, the Bruins pulled out their second win over the Beavers when junior INF Randall Shelley knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning ... The Bruins weren't able to come up with the sweep as six errors marred their final outing against the Beavers. Five of Oregon State's 11 runs were unearned ... Senior SS Josh Canales and sophomore RF Ben Francisco did very well last week at the plate. Canales earned his first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor, after hitting .647 (11-for-17) with four runs, 3 RBI and two stolen bases. With his 11-hit week, Canales has extended his career-high hitting streak to 20 games. Francisco hit .400 (8-for-20) with five runs, five RBI and four doubles ... UCLA plays a midweek game against UC Santa Barbara before heading to Tempe to take on ASU for its final series of the season.
USC (36-16 Overall, 16-5 Pac-10)Last Week: WSU W 7-6, 7-0 This Week: at OSU
USC was selected Monday as one of 16 teams to host an NCAA first-round baseball regional. The Trojans last hosted a regional in 1999 ... The Trojans were named the top team in the country in the Collegiate Baseball poll, they are ranked No. 2 in Baseball America and Baseball Weekly ... USC stands two games ahead of Stanford in the Pac-10 standings. If the Cardinal were to sweep Washington State this weekend, USC will need two wins against Oregon State to win the Pac-10 Championship outright ... USC is coming off a three-game sweep over Washington State. The Trojans outscored the Cougars, 19-7 ... All three starting USC pitchers notched 12 strikeouts apiece in their outings. Junior RHP Mark Prior allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits with 12 K's and two walks. The four earned runs were the most he has allowed this season ... Senior RHP Rik Currier was awarded his first Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor for his efforts against the Cougars. He threw his first solo-shutout of the season, struck out a season-high 12 batters and set a new school and Pac-10 record for most career strikeouts. He now has 424 in his career... Sophomore RHP Anthony Reyes had one of his best outings this season, tossing his first complete game and striking out a career-high 12 batters. In the 5-1 win over WSU, Reyes held the Cougars to one run on five hits with 12 K's and no strikeouts.
WASHINGTON (29-19 Overall, 7-14 Pac-10)Last Week: Portland W 10-5, 5-1, ASU L 6-1/10 inn, L 3-7, L 1-17 This Week: Gonzaga, at ARIZ
The Huskies went 2-3 last week, taking two games from Portland at home, but falling in all three games to the Sun Devils ... Washington outscored the Pilots 15-6 ... In its second win over Portland, the Huskies used four freshman pitchers, LHP Brian Carter and righties Jeff Petersen, Trevor Gibson and Clay Johnson to earn the win ... In the two games against Portland, sophomore SS Tila Reynolds went 3-for-7 with three runs, four RBI, a double, home run and stolen base. Against the Sun Devils, Reynolds had two hits, two runs, a double and three stolen bases ... Washington put up a fight in the first game against ASU taking the contest into extra-innings, but allowed the Sun Devils to score five runs in the top of the 10th inning ... Two Huskies, sophomore LF Jay Garthwaite and DH Bryan Johnson notched multi-hit games in game two of the series. Garthwaite went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Johnson went 2-for-5 with a double and a home run ... Washington suffered its worst defeat of the season in its final Pac-10 home game, falling to ASU 17-1. Johnson was the only Husky to put a run on the board, hitting a homer in the second inning ... Washington heads to Arizona this weekend for its final series of the season.
WASHINGTON STATE (15-35 Overall, 6-15 Pac-10)Last Week: at USC L 6-7, L 0-7, L 1-5 This Week: at Lewis-Clark State, STAN
Washington State will try to end its season on a high note by playing well against Lewis-Clark State and Stanford ... Last week the Cougars struggled against USC pitching, scoring only seven runs off Trojan tossers ... WSU played well in its first game against USC, scoring six runs against Trojans ace, Mark Prior. Junior CF Evan Hecker and senior RF Justin Williams led the Cougars offensively. Hecker went 3-for-5 with two runs, a double and three RBI. Williams was 2-for-4 with a home run ... Sophomore C Jon Baeder was the only Cougar to record a hit in all three games against the Trojans. Baeder went 4-for-9 with one run scored and a double ... Sophomore LHP Garret Alwert had a fair outing against USC in the second game, giving up six runs (four earned) on nine hits in seven innings, but took the loss as WSU was unable to produce any runs ... The Cougars still have a chance to improve on their Pac-10 record from a year ago. Last season, WSU was 6-18 in Conference play.
