BATON ROUGE, La. - The ninth-ranked and second-seeded Arizona State softball team (35-20) won its opening round game against fifth-seeded Penn State (32-27), 4-1, today at the NCAA Region III in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. With two outs in the fourth inning, the Sun Devils unloaded four runs off of two singles and back-to-back doubles to secure the win.
Penn State jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the first inning with three singles off ASU starter Erica Beach (17-10). But Beach would settle in and allow only two more hits the entire game to record her career-high 17th win of the year.
The Sun Devils busted up Penn State's no-hitter in the fourth when Missy Hixon lead off with a single to left field. After a sacrifice bunt by Nichole Thompson to move Hixon to second, Kara Brun hit a deep fly ball to left field in foul ground, allowing Hixon to tag up and move to third. Phelan Wright, who leads the team in two out RBIs, came through again and tied the game with a shot to center field. Beach followed with another single to right field, moving Wright to second. Kirsten Voak then doubled to left field bringing in Wright. Kristin Swetel then crushed her ball over the Penn State center fielder's head for another double, plating Beach and Voak for the final runs.
The game lasted only 1:25 minutes as ASU had seven hits, while Penn State collected five. Beach allowed only five hits with one run, striking out three. Wright went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Voak also had two hits, including the game-winning double.
Up next, ASU will play the winner of the Southern Mississippi vs. Louisiana-Lafayette game on Friday at 4:00 p.m. Central time (2:00 p.m. Arizona time).
