Beavers Fall In Extra Innings

May 18, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State pitcher Stephen Copeland matched highly-touted Mark Prior of No. 2 Southern California on Friday afternoon but OSU fell 7-3 in 10 innings in Pacific-10 baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (30-23 overall, 10-12 Pacific-10) still have NCAA playoff hopes going into the final two games of the regular season.

OSU and Southern California (38-16, 17-5) meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 12 noon, and both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340). USC clinched at least a tie for the Pacific-10 title with Friday's win, which came in front of a season-high crowd of 1,173.

Prior, the likely No. 1 pick in next month's Major League Baseball draft, left the series opener after seven innings on Friday with the score tied 3-3. Copeland pitched into the 10th inning for Oregon State, which lost in extra innings for the third time in four games during its drive toward a postseason berth.

Through seven innings, Prior had allowed three runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out five, Copeland had allowed three runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out one.

'Copeland was outstanding,' OSU coach Pat Casey said of the sophomore righthander, who finally surrendered the deciding runs in the 10th inning.

'I just had to go out and make my pitches,' Copeland said. 'We've got a good offensive team and it doesn't matter who it is (for an opponent), we're going to get some runs.'

Prior had entered the game with a 13-1 record, a 1.34 earned run average and a reputation as one of the most dominant college pitchers of his generation. The Beavers were ahead 3-2, though, after Chris Biles led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run to right-centerfield.

'We came to the yard believing we'd win,' Casey said. 'We understand that Prior is a great pitcher and they've got a great staff, but we were confident we could compete with them.'

Prior, averaging over 10 strikeouts per appearance, fanned three of the first five Beavers he faced but only two more in his final 5 1/3 innings.

'He's pretty good - he throws hard,' said Biles, who had walked and struck out before connecting on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the sixth. 'The pitch he threw there might have been a changeup ... when somebody's throwing that hard, you've got to get set up pretty early.'

After Copeland and Prior traded zeroes through four innings, USC took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Michael Moon led off with a homer just inside the rightfield foul pole, then Josh Self doubled and eventually scored on Seth Davidson's sacrifice fly.

The Beavers came right back to tie in the bottom of the inning, as Josh Carter singled up the middle, stole second and scored on Will Hudson's double to right-center. Hudson was sacrificed to third, then scored when Bryan Ingram hit a potential double-play groundball but beat the relay to first base.

After Biles' homer in the sixth, the Trojans knotted the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh as Self led off with a single, was sacrifced to second, took third on Brian Barre's single and scored on Davidson's groundout to first base.

OSU threatened in the bottom of the seventh, advancing Zach Gordon to second with two out. Biles then bounced a ball up the middle but USC second baseman Anthony Lunetta manged to flag the ball down, spin and throw Biles out by a step to end the inning with Gordon streaking around third.

After Prior's departure, neither USC reliever Brian Bannister nor Copeland allowed a baserunner in the eighth or ninth innings. In the 10th, the Trojans' Jon Brewster led off with full-count walk and Barre followed with a single and that was all for Copeland. Craig Hays, who had saved Sunday's 11-8 win at UCLA, allowed a sacrifice that advanced the runners into scoring position and then intentionally walked Lunetta to load the bases.

A groundout by Bill Peavey drove in the go-ahead run, then Alberto Concepcion singled up the middle to drive in two more for a 6-3 lead. OSU turned to reliever Ben Rowe and Josh Persell's bad-hop single sent Concepcion to third, when pinch-runner Michael Morales was picked off first, Concepcion broke for home and crossed the plate before the Beavers could tag Morales.

Bannister retired OSU in order in the bottom of the 10th, sending the Beavers to just their sixth home loss in 23 games this spring at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
