Women's Basketball Seniors Honored With End Of Season Awards

PULLMAN, Wash. - Former Washington State University women's basketball players Katie Nyseth (Cheshire, Ore.) and Victoria Harrod (Nepean, Ontario) were recently honored with several awards upon the conclusion of the 2000-01 academic year.

Nyseth earned the Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse Academic Salute Trophy, which is presented to the top Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse achiever for the year based on profound accomplishment in the community, the classroom, and on the playing field.

In addition, Nyseth was one of three athletes (Paul Mencke, football, Sarah Allen, rowing) to earn the Pacific-10 Conference Postgraduate Scholarship - a $3,000 grant presented to student-athletes who have excelled academically and athletically and intend to continue their academic work as a full-time graduate student.

Among the honors Harrod earned was the PROWL Award, which is presented for consistent support of the PROWL Life Skills program, strong citizenship skills, strong leadership demonstrated within his or her team and the WSU Athletic Department.

Both players earned the Senior Excellence In Academics Award, which is presented to seniors who earn a minimum of 90 credits with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average. In addition, they must have been members of the WSU Athletics All-Academic team each semester, enrolled at WSU for at least two years as a student-athlete, and excelled in their degree program and sport program.

Nyseth and Harrod were also honored by their respective academic departments at the conclusion of the academic year. Nyseth received from the biological systems engineering department the outstanding senior of the year award. It was the third consecutive year that Nyseth - who carried a 3.87 GPA - had been recognized as she previously earned the department's outstanding junior and sophomore of the year honors.

Harrod, who carried a 3.97 GPA in human development, was named the department's outstanding senior of the year. It was the second consecutive year that Harrod had been honored by the department as she was named the outstanding junior last year.
