Cougar Baseball Falls to #7 Stanford, 19-3
May 19, 2001
PULLMAN - Bookie Gates' eighth home run of the season in the first inning was the closest the Washington State Cougars would come to a win against Stanford Saturday afternoon, as the Cardinal scored 16 runs through the first three innings en route to a 19-3 win at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Cougs dropped to 15-38 with the loss, including 6-17 in Pac-10 play, while Stanford improved to 41-14 (16-7) and is currently within one game of sharing the Pac-10 title after USC lost to Oregon State earlier in the day.
Gates' round-tripper, a solo-hot over the left field fence, cut the Cardinal's lead in half after the first inning at 2-1, but Stanford took control in the second inning by sending 14 hitters to the plate and 10 runs on the scoreboard for a 12-1 lead. Cougar starter Jamin Svendsen surrendered four runs on three hits in his inning-plus of work, but relievers Lankaila Niles and Justin Cayetano also did not fare well against the Cardinal in the second inning, as they each gave up four runs in the second before Nick Kenyon came on with two outs to close out the inning
The Cardinal kept pouring runs on in the third, scoring four runs on five hits off Kenyon to increase their lead to 15, but Kenyon kept Stanford's bats relatively quiet the rest of the way, as he went seven and one-third innings strong and allowed seven runs, five earned, and struck out seven while walking two Cardinal batters.
Down 18-1 in the eighth, center fielder Evan Hecker put the Cougs a run closer as he drove in Tanner Kahler with a single to left center field with two outs. Two batters later, Gates walked with the bases loaded, plating Aaron Smith to make it an 18-3 ballgame. Stefan Bailie nearly cleared the bases in the next at-bat, but his long fly ball to right field fell into Jason VanMeetren's mitt for the final out of the inning.
The season finale for the Washington State baseball team will be Sunday against Stanford at Bailey-Brayton Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
