May 19, 2001

Corvallis, Ore. - The No. 6 Arizona State Sun Devils concluded their wire-to-wire run Saturday to capture the NCAA West Regional Men's Golf Championships at the Trysting Tree Golf Club. Arizona State finished at 12-under-par 852, 15 shots better than second place Arizona.

The real story for the final round was which 10 teams would qualify for the NCAA Championships, May 30-June 2 in Durham, N.C. The Arizona schools were joined by UC Irvine, University of The Pacific, South Carolina, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, Wake Forest, and Washington. UC Irvine and Pacific were the surprise teams of the Regional, finishing third and fourth respectively, after entering the event seeded 21st and 22nd.

Kyle Thompson of South Carolina and Matt Jones of ASU shared medalist honors, finishing at 8-under 208. Thompson shot a final round 2-under 70, while Jones carded a 73. A total of 11 players finished under par for the tournament. The best score of the final round was a 68 turned in by Troy McKinley of Pacific, he finished tied for 15th at 218.

David Yarnes paced Oregon State with a final round 70, to help the Beavers tie for sixth and advance to the finals for the first time since 1994, and for only the third time in school history. Yarnes ended the tournament tied for 19th with teammate Michael Jurgensen at 3-over-219. The rest of the OSU scores include Anthony Arvidson tied for 30th at 221, David Williams tied for 38th at 223, and Daren Grieg tied for 67th at 226.

'I'm proud of the whole team, they played well under pressure today,' Beaver head coach Mike Ketcham said. 'Playing on our home course was somewhat of an advantage, but at the same time the course has been playing under its current conditions for only four or five weeks. Qualifying for the Championships is a huge step for this program.'

In addition to the 10 teams, Nick Watney of Fresno State and Charleton Dechert of Oral Roberts will represent their schools in North Carolina as the top two individuals from teams that did not qualify. Watney tied for fourth at 3-under 213, while Dechert tied for sixth at 2-under 214.
