Men's Golf Qualify For NCAA Championships

Corvallis, Ore. - The Stanford men's golf team shot a 294 in the final round of the 2001 NCAA West Regional to tie for sixth at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Oregon. Arizona State won the event, shooting an 852 for the tourney. Rounding out the top five were Arizona, UC-Irvine, Pacific and South Carolina.

The real story for the final round was which 10 teams would qualify for the NCAA Championships, May 30-June 2 in Durham, N.C. The Arizona schools were joined by UC Irvine, University of The Pacific, South Carolina, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, Wake Forest, and Washington. UC Irvine and Pacific were the surprise teams of the Regional, finishing third and fourth respectively, after entering the event seeded 21st and 22nd.

For the Cardinal, sophomore Philip Rowe tied for 12th with a three-day total of 216 (69-72-75). Jim Seki tied for 26th carding a 220 (72-77-71) for the tournament while Jimmy Lee checked in tied for 30th with a 221 (72-75-74). Senior Alex Aragon tied for 67th with a 226 (71-79-76) and Eric Dahlberg tied for 92nd, recording a 229 over three days (75-80-74).

Kyle Thompson of South Carolina and Matt Jones of ASU shared medalist honors, finishing at 8-under 208. Thompson shot a final round 2-under 70, while Jones carded a 73. A total of 11 players finished under par for the tournament. The best score of the final round was a 68 turned in by Troy McKinley of Pacific, he finished tied for 15th at 218.

In addition to the 10 teams, Nick Watney of Fresno State and Charleton Dechert of Oral Roberts will represent their schools in North Carolina as the top two individuals from teams that did not qualify. Watney tied for fourth at 3-under 213, while Dechert tied for sixth at 2-under 214.
