Nicholson Shuts Out Baseball With 6-0 Win
May 19, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Senior left-hander Scott Nicholson threw his 10th complete game of the season Saturday and the Oregon State Beavers shut out the No. 2 USC Trojans, 6-0, to even the Pac-10 Conference series at one game apiece. The win snapped the Trojans' nine-game winning streak and USC's lead to one game ahead of Stanford. If USC wins tomorrow, the Trojans will win the conference title outright despite the result of the Stanford-Washington State game.
Nicholson (11-2) allowed only seven hits in a pitching gem against USC (38-17, 17-6).
Oregon State (31-23, 11-12) set the tone in the first with three runs. With runners on first and second, Andy Jarvis hit a ground ball to USC second baseman Jon Brewster, whose errant throw pulled shortstop Seth Davidson off second on the possible double play.
With the bases loaded, Josh Carter hit a high chopper to third for an infield single and Rik Currier (10-2) walked designated hitter Pat Stevens. Zach Gordon hit a bunt single down the third base side for the third run of the inning.
Chris Biles hit his second home run in as many games with a solo shot to right in the fifth. It was his ninth homer of the season. Jarvis scored on a double by Carter to left field and a fielding error by Josh Persell. The Beavers added one more run in the seventh on an RBI single by Carter who finished with a 3-for-4 afternoon with three RBI.
Currier allowed only two earned runs as the Trojans committed three errors. It was the first time that Currier has lost since March 10 at Stanford.
The Trojans will conclude their series with the Beavers tomorrow at noon. The game will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
