Cougar Baseball Drops Season Finale to Stanford, 12-1
May 20, 2001
PULLMAN - The Washington State Cougar baseball team said farewell to five seniors Sunday afternoon as WSU closed out its 2001 season with a 12-1 loss to the Stanford Cardinal Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field . With the loss, WSU completes the year with a 15-39 record (6-18 in the Pac-10) while the Cardinal finishes its season with a 42-14 mark, including 17-7 in conference play.
Stanford broke open a scoreless tie in the third inning with two outs as they took advantage of three Cougar errors to score eight runs off starter Zach Fisher, but only two of the eight scores were unearned. Bookie Gates nearly ended the inning as he made a diving backhand stop of a groundball up the middle, but his throw to first to force-out Stanford's Chris O'Riordan just skipped under Stefan Bailie's mitt, allowing O'Riordan to advance to second, and the Cardinal kept the inning alive.
In the fourth inning, Cardinal left fielder Jason Cooper drove in two runs with a dinger that just stayed inside of the right field foul pole to give Stanford a commanding 10-run lead, and he plated another run in the sixth with a double to make it an 11-1 ballgame.
The Cougars' lone run came in the fourth when Bailie crushed his 18th home run of the season over the left field fence to lead off WSU's half of the inning. The Cougars were not able to get much else against the Stanford pitching staff as Cardinal starter Mike Gosling gave up four hits in five innings to improve his record to 7-0, and his relief surrendered one hit through the final four frames to keep the Cougars from making it a tight ballgame.
Senior right fielder Mike Knight capped his last game with a double in his final at-bat, his 13th of the year, and pitcher Donny Davis threw five superb innings in relief to close out the game, as he allowed two runs on three hits and struck out three Cardinal hitters in his final appearance as a Cougar. Catcher Ryan Sullivan and left fielder Justin Williams, two Cougs also completing their last year of eligibility, saw action at their respective positions but neither could record a hit offensively.
