Men's Tennis Downs Washington, 4-1 in NCAA Round Of 16
May 20, 2001
Athens,GA- Like the phrase often said in Hollywood, 'The Show Must Go On' it was truly the most appropriate statement to describe this afternoon's NCAA Championship round of 16 match for the Bruins. UCLA was originally slated to play Washington yesterday at 5:00 pm, but the match was postponed due to a severe thunder and lightening storm. Today's weather looked much more promising, but early morning showers kept the Georgia event staff personnel busy attempting to keep the courts dry. Doubles play began but the weather gods would not cooperate. After a 45 minute rain delay, the contest was moved indoors where No. 2 UCLA looked impressive in posting a 4-1 over No. 15 seed Washington.
The Bruins started the contest in strong fashion after the tandem of Tobias Clemens and Lassi Ketola won the first match of the afternoon, defeating Washington's Andrej Bizjak and Matt Hanlin, 8-3 on court No. 3. Marcin Matkowski and Travis Rettenmaier claimed the doubles point for UCLA, downing Washington's Dillon Ruby and Ari Starsberg, 8-5 on court No. 3. On court No. 1, UCLA's top doubles team of Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Julien Rojer were leading Washington's Jeremy Berman and Andy Posavac, 7-5 before the match was suspended.
In singles, the Bruins continued their momentum as the next two UCLA points came courtesy of Marcin Matkowski and Jean-Noel Grinda. Matkowski defeated Andy Posavac in straights sets, 6-3, 6-4 on court No. 4, while Grinda also posted a straight set victory, downing Andrej Bizsjak, 7-6, 6-3 on court No. 2. The Huskies were determine not to leave the courts quietly as No. 55 ranked Matt Hanlin of Washington upset No. 13 Jean-Julien Rojer in three sets on court No. 1, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. With the match hanging in the balance at court No. 3, Tobias Clemens came back after dropping the first set, 4-6 to go on to win the last two sets, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the victory for the Bruins.
UCLA will return to action tomorrow in a quarterfinal match No. 7 seed SMU at 4:00 pm EST.
