May 21, 2001
Four members of the second-ranked UCLA softball team have been named to the All-Pacific Region Team, and all are now eligible for NFCA All-America recognition. Shortstop Natasha Watley, catcher Stacey Nuveman and utility player Amanda Freed were named to the first team, while third baseman Tairia Mims was a second-team selection at third base. All four were named to the NCAA Regional All-Tournament team, and were named first-team All-Pac-10 this season.
Watley, a sophomore, was a first-team All-American last season as a shortstop. This year, Watley has stolen 51 bases and is second on the team with a .421 batting average. She also leads the team in triples with five, and is the only person to play shortstop for the Bruins this season.
Nuveman was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year for the second time in her career in 2001, as she also won the award as a sophomore in 1999. The junior from LaVerne, CA, led the Bruins and the Pac-10 in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The NCAA active leader in career home runs and RBIs, Nuveman belted her 70th career home run on Sunday at Easton Stadium in the Regional Championship Game.
Freed leads the Bruins with a 0.47 ERA, and has a 19-3 record with 133 innings pitched. Freed returned to the pitching circle last Friday, after a month-long absence from the circle due to injury. Additionally, Freed starts for the Bruins in centerfield when she is not pitching, and has accumulated a .305 batting average with three home runs, three triples, three doubles and 16 stolen bases.
Mims has played four positions for the Bruins this season, the majority at third base. Mims is second on the team with 17 home runs, and has put together 71 RBI and a .731 slugging percentage on the season.
UCLA (59-5) finished second in the Pac-10 conference in 2001, and is the second seed for the Women's College World Series, which begins Thu. May 24 in Oklahoma City.
