May 21, 2001

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Stanford University won its 11th NCAA Women's Tennis Team Championship, and third in the last five years, with a 4-0 victory over Vanderbilt University on Monday morning at the Lincoln Tennis Center. The Stanford Athletic Department has now won at least NCAA Championship in 25 consecutive years dating back to 1976-77.

The NCAA Championship is the first as a head for Stanford's Lele Forood, who was also an assistant coach for six Cardinal national titles. Stanford has also claimed NCAA Championships in 1978, '82, '84, '86, '87, '88, '89, '90, '91, '97, '99, while no other program has won more than three since the tournament began in 1982.

The Cardinal finish the 2001 season with a perfect 30-0 record, marking the ninth undefeated season in program history and first since 1990. Stanford also dropped just one point in its six NCAA Tournament matches, which ties the school record set by the 1989 squad in its four victories.
