May 22, 2001
TEMPE, Ariz. -ASU's No. 6 sophomore Adria Engel and No. 12 doubles tandem Mhairi Brown and Celena McCoury competed in today's first rounds of the NCAA singles and doubles Championships at Stone Mountain, Georgia. The No. 11 Devils (20-6, 5-3), who finished out the team season late last week in a quarterfinal loss to top-ranked Stanford, remain in Georgia for this week's singles and doubles tournament.
Sophomore Adria Engel, currently ranked No. 6 in the nation, defeated No. 44 Jodi Richardson from Brigham Young University, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Engel will advance to tomorrow's Round of 32 against Georgia's No. 25 Anne Nguyen.
Engel was recently awarded the Western Region's 2001 ITA Player to Watch. The ITA Player to Watch Award is awarded to a player who has a tremendous season, has not yet won an ITA Grand Slam singles title, and is expected to continue superb play the rest of his/her career. The award also includes a player's sportsmanship and character. Engel, who transferred from Wake Forest last year, became the first Sun Devil to capture a Pac-10 singles Championship in latter April. Engel leads the Devils with a 30-7 overall record, and has won eleven matches in a row, including 25 of her last 27 matches. She was also designated April's ITA Player of the Month after compiling an 11-1 record during that time.
Engel will battle Anne Nguyen in tomorrow's 12 p.m. (EST) Round of 32 match at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
