Women's Golf Tied for 16th After First Round at NCAA Championships
May 22, 2001
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The Arizona State women's golf team shot a 13-over 305 Tuesday to tie for 16th after the first round of the NCAA Championships being held May 22-25 at par 72, 6,106-yard El Campeon Course at the Mission Inn Country Club.
Oklahoma State holds the tournament lead with a five-over 293 in the first round, while UCLA (295), USC (296), Stanford (298), Georgia (298) and Texas (298) round out the top five after the first day of action. Arizona State is tied for 16th at 305 with Purdue.
Individually, freshman Jimin Kang and sophomore Melanie Hunt led the Sun Devils, each carding two-over 74s on Tuesday to tie for 23rd, four strokes off the lead of UCLA's Laura Moffat who shot a three-under 69 in the first round.
Kang was two-over par on the front nine and even on the back, while Hunt also heated up on the final nine holes with birdies on holes 15 and 18. Kang also nearly turned in a hole-in-one on the eighth hole, a 155-yard par three, hitting her tee shot a foot short of the hole, just one day after she turned in a hole-in-one on the same hole in Monday's practice round.
'We started off a little shaky, but then we settled in,' head coach Linda Vollstedt said. 'We got a good steady, solid round of golf from Jimin (Kang), and I was especially pleased with the play of Melanie Hunt. Melanie had two birdies on the back and a lot of birdie putts. I was very pleased with those two.
'I think our play on the back nine was just a matter of settling in to the excitement of an NCAA Championship. We're still a very young team. Our back nine gives them confidence heading in to tomorrow. It's going to be really bunched up in the middle and we have three rounds of golf left.'
The Sun Devils tee off at 12:40 Eastern Time Tuesday off No. 10, while tee times on Thursday and Friday will be determined by results.
