Laura Granville And Lauren Kalvaria Reach NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Quarterfinals

May 23, 2001

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Stanford University's Laura Granville (Chicago, IL/The Latin School) and Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL/Boca Raton Prep) both won a pair of matches on Wednesday to the advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Singles Championships at the Lincoln Tennis Center. The Cardinal also advanced two doubles teams as top-ranked Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge HS) and Kalvaria, and second-ranked Granville and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV/Reno HS) both reached Thursday's quarterfinals.

Stanford, which won the NCAA Team Championship earlier this week, is the only school to have more than one quarterfinalist in either singles or doubles.

Granville, who meets sixth-ranked Adria Engel of Arizona State in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. (ET), now owns a career NCAA Singles Championship record of 9-0. The Stanford sophomore is 4-0 against Engel this season, including three straight set victories.Granville advanced to the quarters after surviving a scare from 13th-ranked Jessica Lehnhoff of Florida in the second round. Lehnhoff won the first set 6-4, and had a chance to win the match in a second set tiebreaker. Granville bounced back, however, to close out the match 7-6 and 6-1. The defending NCAA Singles Champion then knocked off 41st-ranked Liesl Fichtbauer of Fresno State 6-4, 7-5 in the third round.

Ninth-ranked Kalvaria continued her post-season hot streak with a pair of straight set wins. In NCAA team and individual singles competition in Stone Mountain, Kalvaria is 7-0 with all of the wins coming in straight sets. She defeated 21st-ranked Mariel Verban of Georgia 6-4, 6-1 in the second round and 53rd-ranked Martina Ondrejkova of South Alabama 6-3, 6-2 in the third round. In Thursday's quarterfinals, Kalvaria will face eight-ranked Bruna Colosio of LSU at 9:00 a.m. (ET).

In doubles, Barnikow and Kalvaria moved to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-3 second round win over 31st- ranked Jennifer Radman and Kathy Boyanovich of South Carolina on Wednesday. Barnikow and Kalvaria opened the tournament with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 first round win over UCLA's Mariko Fritz-Krockow and Sara Walker late Tuesday night.

Granville and Lastra, meanwhile, have lost just 11 games in their two opening round victories. Granville and Lastra beat 30th-ranked Ana Moura and Stacy McKenna of Washington State 6-2, 6-4 late Tuesday night in the first round, and rolled over unranked Raluca Ciulei and Martina Nedelkova of Virginia Commonwealth 6-3, 6-2 in Wednesday's second round.
