UW's Carter & Kraszewski Both Fall in NCAA Women's Tennis Round of 16
May 23, 2001
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Washington freshman Claire Carter and senior Kristina Kraszewski each won a match Wednesday to advance to the round of 16 before being eliminated by highly ranked opponents during the NCAA women's singles championships at the Lincoln Tennis Center.
Carter, ranked 43rd nationally, defeated No. 54 Joanne Masongsong of Texas 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 to reach the round of 16. She then lost in straight sets to No. 4 Bea Bielik of Wake Forest 6-0, 6-4.
Ranked 11th among singles competitors, Kraszewski recorded a 7-6, 7-6 second-round decision over No. 46 Lindsay Dawaf of Florida. In the third round, she won the first set before succumbing to Notre Dame's third-ranked Michelle Dasso by a 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 tally.
Kraszewski, who was making her school-record fourth consecutive NCAA single appearance, was mistakenly listed on Tuesday as a first-round loser by the official scoresheet. She in fact defeated No. 33 Janet Walker of Texas 7-5, 6-1 to advance into the second round.
Washington had a pair of doubles duos competing in the 32-team field, both of which were defeated in the first round. The doubles competition, delayed until late Tuesday evening due to rain, was completed indoors. Kraszewski and sophomore Darija Klaic, the nation's 10th-ranked tandem, lost 7-6, 6-3 to Kentucky's Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten. Carter and junior Ilona Kordonskaya, ranked No. 26, fell 6-3, 6-4 to the Ohio State team of Kristy Dascoli and Monica Rincon.
The Huskies registered their best finish ever, reaching the quarterfinals of the women's team competition that concluded on Sunday. Washington lost 4-0 to No. 4 Florida on Friday after a 4-3 triumph over No. 5 Tennessee last Thursday.
