No. 13 Women's Crew Advance to Semifinals at NCAAs

May 24, 2001

After placing third in its morning qualifying heat, the No. 13-ranked Cal Women's varsity eight finished second in its repechage heat to advance to the semifinal of the NCAA Rowing Championships on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, GA, May 24. The Bears out paced No. 8 Harvard and No.15 Virginia to snare the second of three slots for Friday's semifinal that were up for grabs in the race.

In the opening round of racing, Cal had a good row placing third behind No. 2 Michigan and No. 5 Syracuse, but was forced to race again in the repechage or 'second chance' heat due the 'two-to-advance' format in the first round.

'The racing here at NCAA is fierce,' said coach Dave O'Neill. 'Especially in the reps because that is the first of the elimination rounds. I give a lot of credit to varsity eight. It was definitely a big step forward for the young crew.'

When the varsity went to the line at 4 p.m., senior coxswain Michelle Mantegani found herself staring in to a stiff headwind as the race got underway. 'We started into the wind and Ohio State jumped ahead of the field in the early going,' said Mantegani. 'We were second, but Virginia and Harvard were right with us. It was close all the way down the course, but we were able to hang on. I think Harvard sprinted through Virginia at the end, but I wasn't exactly looking around to find out.'

Sophomore stroke Khobi Brooklyn was excited the Bears were able to exact some revenge on Virginia. 'Virginia has always seemed to get the better of us at big regattas,' said Brooklyn. 'They edged us out for the silver (at NCAAs) before I got (to Cal) in '99, they took the bronze (at NCAAs) last year and we were fourth, and they did it again in San Diego this season. We were up to the challenge today.'

In other racing, the Cal JV eight and varsity four finished fourth in their respective heats and will also need to go through a repechage round to claim a slot in the final. Due to the number of entries, the JV and varsity four repechage will not be contested until Friday, May 25.
